Consultant for project documentary in Migori & Kilifi Counties

BACKGROUND

DSW Kenya is a non-governmental organisation that envisions a world where all youth – especially girls and young women – live free from disease and make independent and informed choices over their sexual and reproductive lives with full access to sexuality education, health services and modern contraceptives.

We do this by advocating with policy makers for investment in domestic resources and policies for youth friendly SRHR, through multisectoral approaches.

Through the DSW Youth Empowerment Strategic Approach (YESA), and the Young Adolescent Empowerment Strategy (YAES), we work with young people to raise their awareness on sexual reproductive health and rights, gender equality and access to modern contraceptives and to strengthen their livelihoods.

The DSW lifeyangu.com online platform provides access to accurate, reliable SRHR information to young people, and connects them to health facilities.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Reaching the Last Girl is a three-year project implemented by DSW Kenya in Kilifi South Sub County (Kilifi County) and Rongo Sub County (Migori County) in partnership with EACR. The RTLG project aims at improving the health and well-being of Adolescent Mothers Living with HIV (AMLHIV) (10-19) and their children.

Reaching the Last Girl (RTLG) project is designed to reduce the prevalence of HIV among adolescent mothers and the transmission of HIV from mother to child in Migori and Kilifi Counties, thereby ensuring a more inclusive, healthy, and equitable society for AMLHIV and their children.

The project is targeting Adolescent Mothers Living with HIV Adolescent mothers and are provided with crucial support in terms of linkage to care and treatment, Comprehensive Sexuality education, economic empowerment, and psychosocial Support.

THE KEY ISSUES

Adolescent Mothers (and Fathers) Living with HIV (AMFLHIV) have mental and emotional health challenges due to the negative impact of combined experience of teenage pregnancy, motherhood & life with HIV.

Stressors of parenting as an adolescent living with HIV

• High incidence of child marriage & FGM/C
• Early sexual debut: stigma, discrimination
• High new HIV infections among adolescents
• Lack of parenting skills, child neglect
• Minimal life skills: self-esteem, self-worth, anti-SGBV

Limited access to information & services on SRHR, HIV & Nutrition

• Too young to attend health facilities or receive info in school
• Negative perspectives of health workers
• Risk of falling between gaps of adolescent HIV prevention and adult-focused PMTCT support
• Limitations of culture & traditions: not yet adults, responsibility for self & child
• Inability to provide nutritious food for child’s health development

Basic rights of AMLHIV infringed

• Deliberate exclusion from health, educational & socio-economic services
• Unsupportive family, peer & community relationships
• Limited participation in decision-making spaces
• Poor communication and advocacy skills

THE INTERVENTION

• Increase resilience and independence of AMLHIV and their children.
  • Train AMFLHIV on personal empowerment (self-stigma and self-worth)-life skills
  • Train and mentor AMLHIV to provide effective parenting and holistic psychosocial support to their children and wards
  • Train AMLHIV on food security and optimal nutritional
• Increase access to and uptake of quality integrated HIV, SRHR & nutritional information and services.
  • Provide youth-friendly SRHR and contraception services and information to AMFLHIV and their children, through Psychosocial Social Support Groups
  • Strengthen linkages with health facilities and support referral systems, including registration of births
  • Link and integrate AMLHIV to VSLAs modelled
  • Conduct a one-time transfer of productive assets, e.g. poultry, goats, rabbits etc to AMLHIV
  • Strengthen linkages of AMFLHIV to agricultural extension services to build knowledge and skills in managing those assets.
• Improve agency of AMLHIV and their children to access basic rights.
  • Train AMFLHIV on advocacy and communication
  • Provide technical support to AMLHIV participating in community, ward, county and national decision-making spaces
  • Conduct intense community dialogues and forums led by respected Culture Ambassadors (CA), and Teen Change Advocates (TACs), boldly addressing traditional customs, attitudes and practices that undermine rights and health of adolescent mothers and their children

THE ASSIGNMENT

DSW Kenya seeks the services of an individual consultant / production company to produce a 5–8 minute documentary showing how DSW Kenya has worked with stakeholders in one of our projects – Reaching the Last Girl (RTLG). The consultant will hold interviews with:

• Increase resilience and independence of AMLHIV and their children.
  • Adolescent Mothers
  • Sub-County health -Nutrition
  • DSW and EACR Officers
• Increase access to and uptake of quality integrated HIV, SRHR & nutritional information and services.
  • Adolescent Mothers
  • Sub-County health department
  • Mentor Mothers and/or CHPs
  • General adolescent young people
  • Enterprise officers (Kilifi) and Agricultural Extension Officer (Migori)
  • DSW and EACR Officers
• Improve agency of AMLHIV and their children to access basic rights.
  • Adolescent Mothers
  • Community opinion shapers (Teachers, pastors, Community elders etc)
  • Sub-County health Management team
  • County & Sub-County departments (Gender, Agriculture, Youth)
  • DSW and EACR Officers

SPECIFIC TASKS

• Write the shooting script in collaboration with DSW Kenya staff for the Kilifi and Migori excursion.
• Travel to Kilifi and Migori for a 4-day excursion (2days in Kilifi, 2days in Migori) to collect photo and video footage.
• Take photos and conduct video interviews in Kilifi County and Migori County of individuals listed in section 2 above.
• Acquire DSW-Kenya written consent from the subjects in the photographs/videos.
• Transcribe the video interviews.
• Design a documentary script and outline in collaboration with DSW Kenya.
• Edit the documentary and produce using visual footage collected in Migori and Kilifi county. Submit the first cut for review.
• Incorporate comments of the review and produce and submit final version of the video documentary to the DSW Communications team.
• Process, edit, organize, caption and submit the photos from Kilifi and Migori county to the DSW Communications team.

END PRODUCT

• Written consent from the subjects in the photographs/videos
• Final 5–8-minute video documentary approved by DSW Kenya]
• High quality captioned photos capturing the project in Migori and Kilifi County

PAYMENT SCHEDULE

• Payment for the assignment will be made to the consultant in full after the tasks and deliverables have been accomplished to the satisfaction DSW Kenya’s National Team Co-ordinator, Communications.
• The fee is subject to 5% Withholding Tax for remittance to the Kenya Revenue Authority.
• Payment will only be made against an invoice from the Consultant, showing CONSULTANT /COMPANY BANK DETAILS including their name, address, and Kenya Revenue Authority Personal Identification number (PIN).
