Interpretation for online events: Arabic, French, English, Spanish

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The CALP Network is a dynamic global network of over 90 organisations engaged in the critical areas of policy, practice and research in humanitarian cash and voucher assistance (CVA) and financial assistance more broadly. Collectively, CALP members deliver the vast majority of humanitarian CVA worldwide.

What makes the CALP Network unique is its diversity. CALP members currently include local and international non-governmental organisations, United Nations agencies, the Red Cross/Crescent Movement, donors, specialist social innovation, technology and financial services companies, researchers and academics, and individual practitioners.

Together we seek to better meet the needs and improve the outcomes for people affected by crisis. To do this we ensure that CVA is a central, scalable component of quality, timely and appropriate humanitarian assistance, and that the need to sustain positive outcomes for people over the longer term is considered.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Main objective

To professionally provide simultaneous interpretation, using CALP’s technical terminology, for live, online events in Arabic, English, French and Spanish.

CONSULTANCY RATIONALE

CALP seeks to contact an interpreter company/group of interpreters for live, online events. CALP’s audiences are practitioners and professionals working in the humanitarian world, decision-makers, professionals working in multilateral organizations and charities related to Cash and Voucher Assistance, among others.

OBJECTIVE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

Specific objectives

  • Provide interpretation form or to Arabic, English, Spanish, and French.

KEY DELIVERABLES / MILESTONES

100% of the payment will be made at the end of each piece of work.

TENTATIVE TIMELINE & ACTIVITIES

This scope of work depends on the individual projects between the dates noted above. Each piece of work’s timeframe will be agreed upon and contracted separately. Any additional days and/or modification of Start/End dates must be completed before additional work is commenced.

WORKPLAN/METHODOLOGY

The interpretation will be always simultaneous and may be recorded. Events will range from 1-2 hours and involve humanitarian and CVA terminology. Interpretation should be informed by the relevant CALP glossaries and any other guidance provided by CALP. Effort will be made to share and presentations in advance of the event.

Interpretation should follow guidance that is provided by CALP. The main reference documents will be the relevant style guides, CALP’s Glossary and technical flagship products as well as any other pertinent documents. Other guidance for the interpreters includes:

  • Use the type of English, Arabic, French or Spanish as directed, depending on the event.
  • The interpreter should use the same tone and style of the speaker.
  • Ensure that acronyms must be translated using the CALP glossary other guidance.
  • Make sure that CALP technical terms are used correctly.
  • Selected consultants will need to undergo an induction session with the CALP Communications team to review key terminology and establish ways of working, quality expectations and guidelines, etc.

MANAGEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

This consultant will report directly to the Responsible Manager, listed above, who will be responsible for approving deliverable(s) and invoice(s). Technical supervision will be through Leonela Medina, Communications officer-Spanish Lead.

Action Against Hunger is a host of the CALP Network; we are a U.S.-based organization, and as such must comply with U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules and regulations. If you are selected for the consultant work, and choose to work with Action Against Hunger USA, you must provide the proper IRS form to determine your tax status either with a W-9 form or W-8 form, depending on your tax situation. Physical Demands

• While performing the duties of this job, the consultant may be required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis.

Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

• Must provide own computer, internet, software, and other basic office supplies required to complete the duties for this consultancy

• Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as needed or required by contact with the Project Team or other partners.

MINIMUM DETAILS IN APPLICATION

The consultant should send a technical and financial/costing proposal that will be used to undertake the task including the cost per hour by language for recorded and non-recorded events. The quotes should be in USD. Also include prior experience conducting similar work, Resume / CV/Website, and at least three references of previous or current clients.

PROFILE OF CONSULTANTS

The applicant company/group should have the following essential skills and knowledge:

  • Experienced and preferably certified interpreter with capacity interpreting from and to Arabic, English, Spanish and French.
  • Native proficiency in one of the targeted languages (Arabic, French, English or Spanish) and fluency on the language of interpretation.
  • Accredited translator/s, translation certification required stating languages qualified to translate.
  • Availability to interpret based on the time zones in the Americas.
  • Sound interpretation, flexibility, and attention to detail.
  • Accredited certification preferred.
