Reference No: DCA/30/07/2024
Contracting Authority: DanChurchAid (DCA) Kenya
DCA is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Denmark, working both with long-term development projects and humanitarian action since 1922. DCA’s vision is to strengthen the world’s poorest people in their struggle for a life of dignity. DCA has three thematic priorities: Save lives; Build Resilient Communities; and Fight Extreme Inequalities.
At DCA, we are piloting agroecology models and documenting their positive effects on local food security and the functionality of local food and market systems in areas severely affected by climate change. While agroecology-based models show significant potential in humanitarian contexts, transitioning to more sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural approaches remains challenging for individual farmers and communities.
The Agro-ecology Research Project being implemented in Turkana County and funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, aims to identify critical gaps, synthesize evidence of successes, and develop new models based on a deeper understanding of agricultural systems. Addressing these issues will enable us, as humanitarian actors, to significantly enhance food security for crisis-affected communities and build resilience against increasing climate shocks and stresses. This project contributes to SDG 2, specifically targets 2.1 and 2.4, as well as SDGs 12, 13, and 15.
Furthermore, the project seeks to strengthen the evidence base and explore concrete models to ease and de-risk the transition to sustainable, climate-resilient agroecology-based food production. This will protect the functionality of local food and market systems, enhancing food security and self-reliance in the face of climate shocks and stresses in humanitarian settings.
Consultancy services needed:
Pastoralist communities around refugee hosting areas in Turkana are extremely food insecure, and local conditions make adopting alternative livelihoods challenging. DCA recognizes an opportunity to develop a community-led, bottom-up analysis of food and market systems. This analysis will examine dynamics, constraints, and entry points to inform the design of climate-resilient agroecological models, addressing socio-cultural aspects. Therefore, DCA seeks to engage a consultant with two primary roles:
- Lead Assessment: Assess existing internal and external evidence, best practices, and lessons learned on transitioning to sustainable, climate-resilient agroecology-based food production. The goal is to enhance food security and self-reliance amidst climate shocks and stresses across three different humanitarian settings.
- Model Development: Develop models to facilitate and de-risk the transition to agroecological systems. Additionally, create forecasting and anticipatory action plans to protect local food and market systems from climate shocks and stresses.
The geographical area of the assignment is Turkana West (Kakuma, Kalobiyei Wards), and Turkana Central (Lodwar)
