Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary is looking for an experienced and reputable organisation / individual consultant to conduct an assessment on the institutional and community needs of a donkey welfare clinic and a high-tech donkey hospital managed by the College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture (CVMA), of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

The Donkey Sanctuary (TDS) has been working with Addis Ababa University since 1995, conducting research on the health problems of working donkeys in Ethiopia and providing clinical care and general welfare to working donkeys of Bishoftu and surrounding areas. This involved constructing a high-tech donkey dedicated hospital at the CVMA in 1999, and establishing a donkey welfare clinic in Markato Grain Market in 2008.

As part of our evaluation work and planning for the future, both AAU and The Donkey Sanctuary require an evidence-based assessment to provide an up-to-date understanding of what the needs are for the hospital and the donkey welfare clinic. It is expected that the findings from the needs assessment will contribute to informing how The Donkey Sanctuary best supports the work of the hospital and clinic in the future, and how they contribute to improving the health and welfare of donkeys and mules in Bishoftu and Addis Ababa.

The main objectives of the needs assessment are to understand:

  1. What are the institutional needs of the CVMA for the high-tech donkey hospital and the donkey welfare clinic.
  2. What are the needs of the Addis Ababa City Administration for the donkey welfare clinic in Markato Grain Market.
  3. What are the surrounding community needs (and the needs of their animals) of those who can access the high-tech donkey dedicated hospital and the donkey welfare clinic.
  4. Analyse the Strengths and Weaknesses of the high-tech donkey hospital and the donkey welfare clinic, and identify potential Opportunities and Threats to its success.
  5. Identify and map all stakeholders present in the intervention area who are directly or indirectly affected by the high-tech donkey hospital and the donkey welfare clinic.

The Donkey Sanctuary requires the work to be completed by no later than mid-May 2023. However, it is desirable for the work to be completed prior to this, and as soon as is practically possible. The Donkey Sanctuary’s anticipated budget range for the delivery of the Needs Assessment is £10,000 to £20,000.
