The research will test the assumption that a more integrated urban space in Wau will provide a better space for a resilient community in and around the city. That will include consideration of how the community dynamics of the surrounding payams and how circumstances there affect relations within the town. This research should create a greater understanding as to how the city space is used by different communities and how that affects conflict dynamics. The research will provide evidence and specific recommendations that can be used to design programming that is cognizant of the specific dynamics of the urban environment in Wau and can provide a better foundation for returns, and integration under the principles of durable solutions.

The research should build on previous research that has looked at how competing identities (Vyulsteke, 2018), land governance (Deng et al., 2019; Deng et al. 2021) and urban violence, criminality and gender (Luedke, 2020) play a role in defining how space is viewed and used in Wau.

Qualifications:

NRC seeks expressions of interest from people with the following skills/qualifications:

Knowledge/Skills

· Extensive knowledge of the context and particularly the conflict dynamics of South Sudan.

· Strong understanding of humanitarian principles, action, and programming

· Strong understanding of particular issues related to urban geography and how that setting relates to conflict affected areas

· Excellent proven skills related to research including conducting different types of interviewing and survey methodologies

· Excellent proven writing skills, in English, particularly in discussing complex problems for a broad audience

· Willingness and ability to travel and conduct research in South Sudan, including an ability to use existing or forge new networks in Wau that would benefit this research

· A proven ability to deliver projects on time and to a high standard
