Organization Information

Islamic Relief Kenya (IR Kenya) began its work in Kenya through a one-to-one Orphan Sponsorship Programme in 1993. IRK is an affiliate of Islamic Relief Worldwide, an international NGO established in Birmingham, UK in 1984 and is locally registered with the Kenya NGO Board (Reg. No. 218/051/204/0374/3386). Our projects span emergency and longer-term development support for marginalized communities across Kenya including Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kilifi, Marsabit and Kajiado Counties. Over the years, IRK has supported communities in Garissa County by building their capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change, sustainable livelihoods and improved access to healthcare services.

Project Background

IRK is doing an integrated drought response and recovery project to support drought-affected communities in Mandera and Wajir Counties of Kenya who are among the most affected by the current drought experienced in Kenya. As part of the frameworks to address critical needs in disaster risk reduction, recovery, and resilience building of the communities who are affected by the recurrent drought. IRK is supporting cash transfers, Livestock feeds rehabilitation of strategic boreholes and dams, drilling and equipping of boreholes

As part of building the capacity of its Staff IRK is planning to conduct a ‘training of trainers’ program using the Disaster Recovery Course to increase the skills, knowledge, and understanding of key staff in the areas of community-based disaster risk management. To this end, IRK is seeking to engage the services of a training consultant to train staff as trainers of trainees (ToTs) selected from different county offices in Kenya implementing emergency-related programming

Purpose

The main purpose of this training is to enable IRK leadership are able to enhance the day-to-day work packages of the organization by supporting different departments’ employees with full packages of Leadership and management skills.

The selected consultant needs to train IRK leadership on Governance, Management and Leadership so they will be able to support the IRK employees to deliver assigned tasks on time accurately and independently.

The training courses will be set as Leadership and management courses which consist of

10-15 subdivided subjects as presented next:

Objectives

The objective of the Leadership training is to equip with the IRK leadership required skills or competency within the priority segments to enhance the professional and personal development of high and mid-level managers. Participants shall play increasingly important management and leadership roles within their area of responsibility to achieve the following competencies:

  • Independently and sustainability- IRK leadership is enabled to independently run the daily work of the IRK in a sustainable way by providing secure generic knowledge on management
  • Motivation – Motivate team members through an effective leadership style
  • Goal setting – Effectively set achievable goals in difficult circumstances
  • Responsiveness – Practice how to give Critical Feedback professionally and lead team members by providing constructive Feedback

Scope of work

Target groups

The target group for this training is as follows:

  • Senior and Middle Management –Directors, Managers, and Coordinators
  • Deliver technical training to 10-15 participants for a duration of 5 days, 6 hours per day.
  • Provision courses are executive leadership and management training-Planning, strategic, conflict management, Business case management, Resources management, and stress management)

Consultant’s Roles and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Islamic Relief Kenya PM and HR department, the service provider shall perform the following specific tasks:

  1. Develop leadership training content for participants:
  • Agenda of the Training program
  • Key Learning Points of the Program
  • A brief paragraph on the essence of this training
  1. Develop learning materials for the participants:
  • Develop learning materials for the participants in a workbook/manual form containing important topics/tools
  1. Conduct 5 days of training for 10-15 participants covering topics on Leadership/Management, Teambuilding, Action plan, Management, Conflict Management, Effective and all other courses mentioned above, Communication, Problem diagnosing and solving, Leadership and Authority, Decision making, Example of good and bad leadership, etc.
  2. Develop a follow-up action plan after completion of the training so that participants would use the tools learned in their everyday business situations
  3. Develop a training evaluation summary with a training report
  4. Others – (Initial meetings and briefing + agree on Program activities + briefing with IRK STM and meeting with relevant stakeholders)

Outputs/deliverables

The Service Provider shall provide the following deliverables:

  • Incept report and detailed work plan for the assignment,
  • Detailed training schedule, training materials, and resource mobilization for the program,
  • Delivery of 5 days of Leadership and Management training
  • Report on the Leadership/Management program with all relevant information including a list of participants, resource materials, etc.
  • Final report/end assignment report on the leadership/management training program together with a DVD with all power points, video clips, and activities documented.
  • Issue certificates to the training participants.
  • Report produced in compliance with IRK standards and policy.

IRK’s responsibilities

The responsibility of IRK shall be as follows:

  • Monitor and supervise the work of the Service Provider
  • Provide technical support/ feedback as necessary
  • Provide a list of participants for the training program
  • Ensure payment of an agreed amount based on the delivery of quality deliverables as mentioned in the TOR.
  • Perform any other tasks as may be described in the contract document

Assignment time

Duration to complete the assignment are 5 days from 1st July 2023 excluding any preparation time for the consultant.

Eligibility criteria

  • Master’s degree in a related field such as Business Administration, Management, Public Administration, Political science, or International Development.
  • Have practical experience in organizing leadership training program
  • Have proven work experience with the private sector, government, or UN agencies and conversant with labor organizations in Kenya.
  • Have excellent networking ability with the stakeholders in the country including government agencies, industries, NGOs, training organizations, etc.
  • Have a previous successful track record of being able to meet deadlines and complete assignments within the stipulated time-frame
  • Prior work experience with any INGOs, UN, or international agency shall be an advantag

Submission of proposals

  • The IRK invites technical and financial proposals from qualified organizations/Firms or Individuals to implement the assignment. The proposals should include a detailed methodology, a cover letter/motivation letter explaining why they are the most suitable for the work, and a detailed budget.
  • Technically and financially qualified organizations/Firms or Individuals shall be awarded a contract as per IRK procurement and financial rules and regulations. Payment shall be made in KES as per IRK financial rules and payment conditions as stipulated in the service contract/purchase order and ToR.
  • The interested organizations/Firms or Individuals are requested to submit their proposals in hard copies on or before 18th May 2023 at 11:00 am in our Nairobi Office Tender Box
