Movement On The Ground

Movement on the ground is hiring a Community Volunteer Coordinator at Lesvos

Are you willing to use your organisational skills for a very impactful NGO in the humanitarian field? Are you up for a challenge and do you want to contribute to our mission? Then you should definitely join our highly motivated team as a Community Volunteer Coordinator

The Movement

Movement on the Ground is a Dutch-Greek NGO responding to the refugee situation in Greece and across the world. Movement acknowledges the dire circumstances, but remains optimistic about the positive change that can be achieved. At the core of our mission stands the “Camp to CampUs” philosophy, which outlines the concept of transforming refugee hotspots into healing and empowering environments. This philosophy enables people on the move to have room to experience a sense of community, nurture their skills and talents, build connections with their host community and generate prospects for their future.

In line with our ‘Camp to CampUs’ philosophy, our community volunteers (the camp residents) make up the majority of our volunteers. As a community volunteer coordinator, you will be their focal point.

About the role

You will be coordinating activities and support the welfare and personal development of each community volunteer. Your work will be based in camp, in and amongst your colleagues and residents. You will be busy all day interacting with all the involved actors, making plans, resolving issues and building relationships. The role is people-focussed, though you may also be asked to undertake desk work such as compiling reports and financial summaries.

Main responsibilities

  • Overseeing Community Volunteer recruitment, maintaining the Community Volunteer database and keeping up-to-date records of volunteers by programme;
  • Working with programme coordinators to plan and deliver activities which involve Community Volunteers;
  • Connecting Community Volunteers to the MOTG education programme – spreading information, coordinating sign-ups and follow-up, and overseeing personal development plans;
  • Overseeing engagement and information flows to/from Community Volunteers, including through team meetings and feedback sessions, surveys and one-on-one meetings;
  • Understanding the other services available to Community Volunteers and making referrals as appropriate, for example external educational or medical services
  • Overseeing Community Volunteer exits, planning farewell events, writing recommendation letters and passing on helpful information for their next step
  • Supporting general camp operations together with the rest of the team, including scheduled supervision of activities

You will need to

  • Be extremely open, compassionate and empathetic – ready to interact with a highly vulnerable community with sensitivity and care
  • Be organised – able to design and implement work plans, compile reports and financial summaries relating to the programme
  • Be a team player – working within a small team of 6 coordinators, being friendly, helpful and flexible
  • Be resilient and comfortable working in extremely stressful, distressing, and fast-paced situations
  • Be willing to go above and beyond to support the community we serve – working evenings or weekends if the situation demands

Experience

  • At least 1 years’ experience working or volunteering in a refugee setting – preferably in Greece
  • Experience in an educational setting, for example a school or adult college, or NGO education programme is a bonus

Languages

  • Advanced English speaking, reading and writing is required
  • Knowledge of Greek, Arabic, Somali or Farsi is a bonus

What we offer you

  • To join an inspiring & entrepreneurial team that makes impact around the world
  • 40-hour contract
  • Access to shared housing and a shared car
  • Start date: as soon as possible
