Position Summary
Reporting to and under the direction of the Site Coordinator, the Community Educator will develop and implement strategies to increase awareness of the role of research in COVID-19 and HIV prevention and engage key populations in research conducted at the Harlem Prevention Center (HPC) Clinical Research Site (CRS). S/he will coordinate the day to day community engagement and outreach activities for the CRS and serve as the Community Advisory Board (CAB) Liaison for HPC. In addition to building awareness, interest and participation in clinical research initiatives of HPC, s/he will work with the CRS outreach and recruitment team to monitor and support recruitment and retention. S/he will develop informational and educational presentations, resources, and other materials to make prospective participants and local stakeholders aware of current and future studies at HPC. S/he will plan, organize, implement and participate in community outreach activities for post-study data dissemination. S/he will develop and maintain relationships with collaborative community partners and cultivate new ones in order to engage individuals and communities impacted by HIV in prevention research.
S/he will attend and participate at regular CAB meetings, community events and community partners meeting to facilitate community COVID-19 and HIV prevention education, encourage community participation; as well as address any questions or concerns. In addition, s/he will update and maintain the HPC website and social media regularly, posting events, information and news surrounding its research activities in coordination with the ICAP communications office.
Responsibilities
- Conduct all research activities in accordance with the study protocol and study-specific procedures and other appropriate institutional regulations, procedures and policies, including procedures to safeguard confidentiality of study participants. (5%)
- Build strategic relationships to support the overall mission and aims of the CRS. (5%)
- Develop and conduct educational presentations for stakeholders and diverse groups representing prospective study participants. (10%)
- Design and maintain social media platforms and accounts to promote recruitment and retention. (10%)
- Conduct a variety of outreach activities to recruit and retain participants for research studies at HPC. (10%)
- Develop and implement outreach and education plans and programs including the site’s Community Engagement Work Plan for COVID-19 and HIV prevention studies. (5%)
- Develop site and study-related informational and educational materials in print and digital media. (10%)
- Plan, organize, and implement special events such as community-wide educational groups and study related information dissemination events. (10%)
- Develop and maintain relationships with collaborative community partners and cultivate new ones in order to gain access to individuals or communities at risk. (5%)
- Represent HPC at CAB meetings and other relevant community, local, and national meetings. (5%)
- Participate in community health fairs and other related community events. (5%)
- Participate in regular meetings with site leadership and study staff to ensure high-quality performance of job responsibilities. (5%)
- Attend site and study related trainings, and meetings and conferences as requested by the site leadership. (5%)
- Be the point person for communication with research network community working groups. (5%)
- Perform other related duties as assigned by site leadership. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Education, Human Services, Humanities or related field and two years of related experience
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in successful community outreach or recruitment activities or any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform job functions
- Capacity to conduct street and community outreach appropriately tailored to populations of diverse gender and racial identities and diverse sexual orientations
- Ability to interact with the public, healthcare providers, community organizations and social service agencies
- Experience working with diverse, medically underserved populations
- Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
- Excellent interpersonal, communication (both verbal and in writing) and organizational skills
- High proficiency in MS Office Applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Power Point)
- Experience working with a variety of social media platforms
- Demonstrated experience working in a team and independently
- Demonstrated sound judgment, initiative and discretionary abilities
- Able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- HIV/AIDS knowledge a must
- Cultural competency a must
Preferred Qualifications
- Spanish-speaking preferred
- Knowledge of New York City communities of Black men who have sex with men and of the transgender experience
- Knowledge of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and HIV prevention
- Graphic design and illustration skills preferred
Other Requirements
- No international travel required; travel to national conferences/meetings up to 3-4 times a year
