About Us

Resident Engagement and Participation is a relatively new service in the Council bringing together libraries, community centres, resident engagement, arts, heritage and events. It is working on key council priorities including participatory democracy, deepening the Council’s relationship with the Voluntary and Community Sector and contributing to the Community Wealth Building agenda; ensuring that we put residents at the heart of everything we do.

About The Job

This newly created post will sit within the Libraries and Community Assets Team. The successful applicant will continue the implementation of the Council’s community centre strategy and social value policy. Another key aspect of the role will be developing our Town Halls into thriving and quality venues and managing the Town Hall team. This will involve working with a range of colleagues across Council departments, making recommendations to senior managers, building a relationship with organisations occupying Council community centres and being the key contact between organisations and the wider Council. It will require excellent relationship management, administration and project management skills.

About You

You will have experience of managing venues and / or working with community venues and organisations, an understanding of the social value that they can bring to a local community through an asset based approach and ideally, experience of helping those organisations develop and capacity build. You will have excellent project management skills and experience of delivering complex projects on track, within a political environment. You will be able to establish good working relationships with a range of stakeholders –internal and external and work with them through challenging situations to deliver solutions. You will be confident presenting your recommendations verbally and in written reports to senior managers and councillors. You will have experience of managing grants or subsidies and monitoring the outcomes and outputs and also be able to exploit the commercial opportunities that then enables subsidised community provision. You will also have a keen eye for detail and maintain accurate and up to date records. You will be able to build and develop a new team Ideally, you will have an understanding and experience of building management and lease monitoring.

About Us

The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the both the Theatre Royal Stratford East and Stratford Circus Arts Centre offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.

Newham has a large housing regeneration programme that will build over 1,000 new council homes by 2022.
