Communications Associate – Online Presence and Outreach

The Communications Associate–Online Presence and Outreach will oversee ICTJ’s website and online communications—including the maintenance and improvement of the multilingual website, management of the English-language social media channels, coordination of the Arabic- and Spanish-language social media channels, and management of email communication—and will help design and implement digital outreach strategies with a view to increasing visibility and impact of ICTJ’s content and brand. This position is hybrid and based in New York City.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Communications Associate will:

  • In coordination with members of the Communications team, help produce, oversee, and ensure the quality of the website’s content, including written content (the drafting and editing of website text and editorial content such as features), photos, graphic design and other visual elements, infographics, and multimedia products. This includes regularly updating the website’s static content and helping manage the media coverage on the website.
  • Liaise with and manage the workflow of ICTJ’s external web developers to ensure the website’s orderly maintenance and security, as well as its high quality, functionality, and ongoing improvement.
  • Manage the production of content for ICTJ’s English-language social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium, and YouTube) and coordinate with members of the Communication team to produce the content for the Spanish- and Arabic-language social media channels. This includes maintaining a digital content and events calendar.
  • In collaboration the Communications team, design and implement digital outreach and social media strategies and campaigns, including those for specific digital projects, products, and events, with a view to increasing the reach and impact of ICTJ’s activities and products.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, develop and coordinate the email distribution strategy for events, publications, editorial content such as press releases and features, and other products.
  • Work with members of the Communications team and other relevant staff to ensure the high quality of ICTJ’s brand on all digital assets, including the multilingual website, social media channels, and email products.
  • Work closely with relevant ICTJ staff and liaise with external partners to occasionally help plan and assist with the communication-related logistics of on-site events.
  • In collaboration with relevant ICTJ staff, occasionally contribute to the coverage of ICTJ events, including covering them live on social media, conducting interviews with participants (audio or video), and/or taking photos for use in written articles, reports, or multimedia products.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Communications Associate, help oversee the work of the Communications intern, including as it relates to media coverage, the newsletters, editorial content, and other tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Media Studies, Journalism, Human Rights, International Relations, Public Policy, or another relevant field preferred. Relevant master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years relevant professional communications work experience, preferably in human rights, international law, social justice, or other nonprofit sectors. Minimum of 3 years professional experience in marketing and outreach, including managing social media and email campaigns and managing or maintaining a website. Experience with SEO and SEM is a plus.

Related Skills or Knowledge

  • Interest in human rights, transitional justice, or international affairs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, including strong editing skills, with the ability to tailor messages to specific audiences. Knowledge of Spanish, Arabic, or French is preferred.
  • Superior ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong research and analytical skills as well as the ability to solve problems and exercise good judgment.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Proven ability to manage social media channels to effectively disseminate content and messaging.
  • Experience designing and implementing digital dissemination strategies.
  • Experience managing or maintaining a complex website.
  • Experience with one or more CMS platforms (especially Drupal) and analytics software; knowledge of HTML is a plus.
  • Experience with design software (Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Illustrator).
  • Experience with photo research, photo-editing, and management of photographs and other digital assets is a plus.
  • Experience with MailChimp (or other bulk email software) and media contact databases.
  • Experience managing external vendors.

This position is based in the New York city office on a hybrid schedule. Selected candidates must have authorization to work in the United States.

Salary Range: $60-71K USD range annually, commensurate with expertise and knowledge.
