Overview of Position

Under the overall supervision of our clients representative & under the direct supervision of the Communications Specialist, with oversight from the Head of Strategy & Resource Mobilization (SRMU), the Communications Assistant will provide support to enhance internal & external visibility of our clients program in Somalia, web publishing & media relation activities in Somalia.

Role Objectives

In particular, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Provide support in Somali language to specific communication activities:

  • Interact with Somali media & pitch stories of interest, organize visits for local media to the field & serve as focal point for local media missions.
  • Support the organization of a training for Somali & international journalists in food & agriculture issues in the first half of 2024.
  • Update our clients media list of strategic partnerships with media organizations & journalists in Somalia.
  • Support the development & maintenance of our clients website.
  • Produce social media cards (including photos & videos) to boost social engagement & improve donor’s visibility both in English & Somali.
  • Translate content into Somali for our clients website & Twitter account.
  • Program tweets in Somali in Hootsuite.

Procurement of visibility items:

  • Prepare technical specifications for visibility items (e.g., caps, tee shirts, stickers) following corporate branding guidelines, request procurement of items, conduct technical evaluation of samples & coordinate shipping to our clients Somalia offices, as well as managing stock.

Enhance internal communications at our clients office in Somalia & their HQ level:

  • Promote better internal communications, knowledge sharing & pride in our clients work across country through posters, screen content, staff activities, etc.) to boost connection among colleagues across different offices.
  • Contribute to writing articles & other content for the intranet to maximize presence of our clients Somalia program across the organization & to highlight colleague’s work in the field.

Provide overall support to the Communications Specialist:

  • Support the Communications Consultant in the development of the communication plan & quarterly calendar of events for our clients in Somalia for the year 2024 & in close consultation with program staff including Project Managers & other technical colleagues.
  • Gather inputs to develop briefs & other material to showcase our clients work & results in Somalia, working closely with IM, program staff & technical teams.
  • Develop materials for media events, such as seasonal FSNAU technical releases, world day campaigns such as international women’s day, project launches & dissemination of key findings of key studies, research, assessments & evaluations.
  • Upload communications archive to the cloud, including visual & audio footage archive, b-roll, completed videos, photos, captions, infographics, stories, communications plans, graphic elements.
  • Any other duty as requested.

Expected outputs:

  • Number of goods procured.
  • Number of communication products produced for our client.
  • Number of infographics & graphic design materials.
  • Quarterly newsletter in Somali.
  • Number of social media cards produced both in English & Somali.
  • Number of stories pitched to local media.
  • Updated Somalia media list of strategic partnerships for our client with media organizations & journalists in Somalia.

Project Reporting

  • This role works under the overall supervision of our clients representative & under the direct supervision of the Communications Specialist.

Key Competencies

  • University degree in communication, social science, journalism, political science, or a related field.
  • 1 years of relevant experience in communication, public information, journalism, international relations.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of client’s official language used for communication within the country (English) & working knowledge in Somali is required.

IT skills required:

  • InDesing, Photoshop & Premiere.
  • Microsoft Office.
  • Twitter / Hootsuite.
