The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are very good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Kiev, Ukraine.

Welthungerhilfe, together with other members of Alliance2015, supports the population affected by the conflict in Ukraine, within Ukraine and in its neighbouring countries. As Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is setting up its presence in Ukraine, this position will be pivotal in supporting the set up of WHH’s operational presence in Ukraine. Moreover, this position will be closely involved in working with WHH Alliance2015 partners, Cesvi and Concern, on a joint response project for Ukrainian internally displaced people. As Communication Officer Ukraine Programme you will be responsible to address and handle all communication requirements related to the programme and to align with WHH’s overall communication on the Ukraine crisis.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop communications content around WHH and Alliance2015 response in and around Ukraine, promoting the specific needs of the most vulnerable population impacted by the crisis – this could include case studies, collecting quotes, taking photos and videos, media materials (including for social media), fact sheets, Q&As, and other materials relating to our humanitarian response
  • Production and editing of images and short videos for the homepage, social media or other publications
  • Write short texts for marketing and communication purposes about the project work and the humanitarian situation in the project regions
  • Prepare and brief WHH spokespersons before interviews
  • Willingness to give interviews independently if needed
  • Research for interview requests or donor inquiries related to the project work
  • Research for thematic inquiries in the aftermath of the current war on the impact of war on global issues
  • Compile country inquiries and write short texts on the longer-term impact of the crisis on our work
  • Liaise with colleagues from Alliance2015 partner organizations and exchange information and communication materials
  • Develop a network of contacts with international media covering the crisis
  • Act as a point of contact for other Alliance partners on the ground, providing information updates, including key messages and Q&As
  • Assist in the preparation of advocacy quotes if needed

Your profile

  • A university/polytechnic degree or completed training in a field commensurate with the position
  • Previous journalism experience and public relations knowledge
  • Experience in managing humanitarian communication in crisis situations is desirable
  • Confidence and experience in writing independently
  • Proficiency in the use of image and video editing programs
  • Ability and willingness to travel at short notice
  • Confident in creating content for digital channels (social media, website)
  • Readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for traveling to Welthungerhilfe’s project countries
  • Excellent spoken and written German and English; Russian and/or Ukrainian language skills would be an asset
