Communication Officer – LICA 9 – Mogadishu, Somalia

Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator Immunization and VPD Surveillance, and the overall guidance of the WHO Representative, the incumbent is a key member of Immunization/Polio team in Somalia and will have the following roles and responsibilities:

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as the in-country Polio communications focal point for coordination with the polio regional communications focal point; align joint communications with partner agencies at country level
  • Work closely with the Regional Office and with HQ to make sure all communication approaches and products are aligned with GPEI and other immunization partners priorities
  • Contribute to development of a country-level communications strategy; provide guidance on positioning of narrative and priority themes, ensuring alignment with global and regional strategies
  • Develop donor visibility materials and communications highlighting impact of donor support
  • Provide communications support for high-level (RD/DG/POB) missions to Somalia
  • Support in producing and compiling internal and external reports and contribute to the development of monthly and annual reports.
  • Work with technical staff on development of key messages, talking points, position statements, and other communication materials to facilitate dissemination of GPEl messages to stakeholders
  • Work and collaborate closely with the country communication team and other country units on overall communication strategies
  • Perform any other roles assigned by the Supervisor

Qualifications

Educational background

Essential: University degree in Communication, journalism, political science or international relation.

Desirable: Training in advocacy

Professional experience and knowledge

Essential: At least 2 years experience in communication, journalism, political science or international relation.

Desirable:

  • Experience in planning and implementing media and communications projects tactics, including the development of audio and visual materials and tools.
  • Knowledge or understanding of WHO mandate and goals of immunization or experience in similar positions in the UN or NGOs.
  • Experience in complex emergencies
