The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and malnutrition. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes, and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall direction of FAOR, guidance and supervision of the Communication Specialist, the Communications Assistant will collaborate with the FAO Project teams, more especially the FAW Emergency Project. The candidate will perform a wide-range of graphic designing, photography and videography tasks efficiently and effectively.

The candidate will fully be involved in creating and implementing the base material component of FAO visibility relating to the FAW support of the Organization vis-à-vis the implementation of its Country Programming Framework (CPF) in Zambia.

Technical Focus

  • Contribute to the preparation of all FAO communication materials and platforms, including print and digital media;
  • Prepare and submit a publications design and production work plan outlining dates for designing the publications and production
  • Collection of footage for FAW demo site activities and FAO project activities (photo and video)
  • Obtain and review content for FAO and FAW communication materials and using the licenced applications design and upload content and submit for review and approval
  • Take shots and collect footage of FAO FAW stakeholder events and produce documentaries, stories using the photo and video editing tools and publish content as may be advised by the Communication Specialist
  • Design and printing of FAO and Fall Armyworm publications including Field Manuals, Brochures and Publications
  • Collection and editing footage and production of video graph for FAO and FAW programmes

Tasks And Responsibilities

In close collaboration with OCC branches and focal points, the incumbent will::

  • Contribute to the preparation of all FAO communication materials and platforms, including print and digital media;
  • To take shots and collect quality and high-resolution photos, record high resolution and quality videos and obtain interview material of FAO Officials, Government Counterparts, Donors, Resource Partners, Technical and Field Experts, Consultants including beneficiaries (youth, children, households) during FAO stakeholder events, visits to FAO Project sites etc. as may be assigned from time to time;
  • Designing and production of high-quality visibility material using licensed graphic design applications;
  • All photographs and videos produced in colour or black and white as may be required and must contain complete caption information. Caption information should be in line with FAO guidelines final edited digital images (including caption information) must be stored in the country communication folders in FAO share point;
  • Ensure that FAO guidelines for photography and videography including copyright rules and regulations are strictly adhered to;
  • Production of graphs, charts, illustrative maps, diagrams, icons, and graphics aligned with visual identity charts and elements which may be required for FAO Technical Reports, General Reports, Field Guides, Brochures and Flyers;
  • Contribute to the laying out of reports, information sheets and other publication materials;
  • Assist in design and implementation of templates such as brochures, event materials, info sheets, presentations and situation report and convert them to other publishing software;
  • Contribute to web and social media content development, internally and externally;
  • Assist in developing web design mock-ups for internal and external platforms;
  • Prepare templates for videos of FAO events and activities for social media, as well as assisting in the edition of the videos.
  • Prepare “ready for production” files in line with print and web best practices;
  • Participate in communication fora and working groups
  • Perform other duties as may be required.
  • Liaison with the Office of Communication (OCC) will be maintained, either directly or through an agreed focal point/coordinator, to ensure compliance with OCC standards, appropriate review and clearance processes.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in Communications, Journalism, Digital innovations – graphic design, infographics, photography, or related field.
  • 3 years of relevant experience in photography, social media management, graphic design, videography, infographics, development of brochures, flyers etc.
  • Working knowledge of English as a working language.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work.
  • Understanding of FAO policies and programmes is considered a strong asset; and familiarity with UN administrative, operational and financial procedures is an asset.
  • Good knowledge of community level communications channels such as local radio and brochures in local languages.
  • Knowledge of videography, TV production, social media usage and other digital tools.
  • Very good knowledge of the MS Office applications, Internet and office technology equipment.
  • The applicant should possess computer/word-processing skills.
