The Opportunity – CMAM Nurse (Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition Nurse) (Gaza)

Post location: Gaza Field Office – Rafah and subject to change based on SC priorities and response in Gaza.

Contract Duration and Level of Effort: 4 months

ROLE PURPOSE:

Under overall guidance and supervision of the Nutrition Officer, the CMAM Nurse will provide screening, treatment, nursing care and following up for children with acute malnutrition in assigned nutrition site/ Mother Baby Areas according to national protocols and or guidelines/protocols developed by the nutrition cluster. He/she will closely work with partner nutrition staff to provide a holistic package of nutritional care for mothers and children.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Implementing and following at all times the universal hygiene standards, security rules, and other protocols and procedures regarding nursing and children’s nutrition matters
  • Responsible for the overall case management of acute malnutrition (SAM/MAM) cases
  • Admission of eligible children into wasting treatment services
  • Weekly/biweekly follow-up of children, including relevant anthropometric measurements and routine vital sign data
  • Conduct appetite tests for SAM children during enrolment and consequently during each follow-up visit to nutrition centre.
  • Provision of correct ration and dosage of ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) with instructions on use
  • Transferring children with complications to the nearest stabilization centre (SC/ TFC)
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients including vital signs and medications in the outpatient therapeutic feeding centre.
  • Ensure comprehensive health checks and treatment according to the CMAM protocols for identified malnutrition cases
  • Correctly filling and regularly updating the SAM/MAM patient cards and relevant registration books according to the CMAM reporting and MEAL guidance.
  • Provision of medications for SAM and MAM children as per the systematic treatment guideline for CMAM following national or nutrition cluster guidance.
  • Provide necessary tailored counselling and regular H&N education session for the mothers/ caregivers of children suffering from acute malnutrition
  • Appropriate discharge of children from services when they reach cured criteria
  • Work closely with Community Engagement Workers to trace defaulters in the community
  • Work closely with the partner staff at the Nutrition site in the planning and organizing of malnutrition treatment services in the site
  • In coordination with the Nutrition Officer ensure adequate availability of all food supplies in the nutrition site
  • Prepare the weekly/ monthly report for malnutrition treatment in the site
  • Update the internal stock cards for food and other supplies
  • Ensure proper storage and inventory of specialized nutrition foods and other medicine, medical items in the MBA nutrition sites.
  • Report on progress and any problems in a timely manner
  • Adhere to quality assurance measures and standards to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and feedback mechanisms to enhance program performance.
  • Participate in training sessions and capacity building activities to enhance clinical skills, knowledge of best practices, and understanding of program objectives. Share expertise and mentor junior staff members as needed.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned by supervisors

In order to be successful, you will bring/have:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSC in nutrition, nursing, public health or midwifery

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential:

  • Nursing diploma from a recognized institute
  • Motivated and prepared to work in the field areas in challenging conditions
  • Ability to work alongside others under stressful conditions in conflict-prone situations
  • Ability to communicate with the conflict affected population
  • Fluency in Arabic

Desirable:

  • Prior experience of providing treatment to children with acute malnutrition
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Experience in individual/group counselling
  • A good understanding of recommended infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices
  • Effective self-organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
