Overview of position:

  • Our client has been added to KFW funded phase III of multiyear multistakeholder grant joint action for resilience building in Somalia along two other UN bodies UNICEF & WFP where our client implements FSL components under outcome 3 households maintain & improve FSL status through improved & diversified agricultural production & income generation. This position is therefore required to manage KFW joint resilience project in Gedo region, Somalia. This is a USD 17 million USD resilience project that requires technical team on the ground for quality control & implementation.

Role objectives: To ensure the project is implemented in a timely & professional manner, according to objectives, goals & indicators, in line with donor requirement & based on beneficiary needs. Under the overall guidance of our clients representative in Somalia & the direct supervision & functional guidance of the Resilience Field Project manager, the post holder Climate Smart Natural Resources Management (NRM) Officer is in charge of delivering Climate Sart Natural Resources Management (NRM) components of project activities including agro forestry, soil conservation in farmland, rangeland reclamation, fodder management, formation of NRM / FMNR committee & establishment of NRM / FMNR sites etc. S / he will be responsible for collecting monthly early warning early action data & submit its report timely. S / he will be in charge of leading renewable energy interventions, planning all NRM activity timely & submission the progress report. S / he will work under the functional guidance of the Resilience Field Manager. Other key tasks S / he will undertake include:

  • Delivery of a provision of smart climate natural resource management training with target groups & local authorities.
  • Establish & strengthen existing early warning & early action committees & NRM / FMNR committees.
  • Establish community nursery & fodder demonstration farms.
  • Ensure quality insurance of the NRM interventions.
  • Lead rangeland management interventions.
  • Lead selection of rangeland rehabilitation sites with fodder in rain fed farm / communal land.
  • Lead renewable energy support.
  • Develop smart climate on NRM project activities schedule.
  • Submission regular reporting.
  • Ensure hand over, functionality & sustainability.
  • Support NRM infrastructures.
  • Provide support & supervision to the implementing partners & community stakeholders in the establishment & management of community tree nurseries.
  • Collect / consolidate all field data for analysis & documentation.
  • Provide support to the initiative on Safe Access to Fuel & Energy (SAFE), in the humanitarian context.
  • Perform any other duty & activity upon instructions of your supervisor
  • Perform any other related duties as required.

Expected output:

  • Identify early warning & early action & natural resource management committees.
  • Training on climate smart on NRM with target groups.
  • Ensure formation of community tree nursery & afforestation.
  • Document existing & traditional & formal community based natural resource management strategy by groups & institutions, including regulation, procedures for seasonal access to critical resources & their timing & effectiveness in promoting eco system health among different groups.
  • Lead rangeland rehabilitation with watershed management.
  • Collaborate with Project Engineer on implementing flood protection support.
  • Promote water roof harvesting.
  • Identify & implement establishment of agro forestry / FMNR sites across targeted locations.
  • Building community ownership & sustainability of each intervention.
  • Monitor each NRM from clearing day up to finishing & functionality & report each stage.
  • Organize hand over MoU & events for each NRM Interventions.
  • Ensure quality insurance for NRM interventions.
  • Plan smart climate NRM activities schedule & implement timely.
  • Report progress of smart climate NRM & sector.

Project reporting:

  • This role reports to the Resilience Field Project Manager.

Key competencies:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Natural Resource Management, Climate Change, Agriculture, Rural Development field from a recognized University / Institution.
  • Minimum of 7 years of demonstrable relevant natural resource management & / or agro forestry.
  • Ability to effectively use standard office software, such as MS Office (Windows, Word, Outlook, Excel) etc.
  • Ability to use software & other computer systems to prepare weekly progress reports in the appropriate format.
  • Good in site supervision skills.
  • ToT of natural resource management & climate change.
  • ToT of farmer managing natural regeneration.
  • Experience in holistic land & livestock management.
  • Experience in watershed management.
  • Experience in flood protection with evidence.
  • Experience in excellent spoken English & Somalia & written communication.
  • Sound knowledge FSL, particularly agriculture.
  • Gedo region experience is highly preferred.

Team management:

  • This role has no team management responsibility.
