The Danish Red Cross (DRC) is looking for a Climate Policy Officer to join our ambitious international policy team, dedicated to driving the Danish Red Cross’ policy influencing work at a global level. The Climate Policy Officer will be responsible for covering the Danish Red Cross key priority policy area related to the humanitarian consequences of climate change. If you have a sharp pen, political flair and knowledge of major climate policy frameworks and processes related to climate change adaptation and loss & damage due to climate-induced disasters, you might be our new colleague.

About the position and assignments

To achieve the ambitious goals of the Danish Red Cross International Strategy 2022-25 the Climate Policy Officer will support the development and implementation of the overall framework for the Danish Red Cross’ climate policy work by identifying policy positions and avenues for advocacy, and pushing forward those efforts. This includes building relationships with key partners, stakeholders and actors in Denmark and at a global level – together with Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement partners.

Based in the International Department of the Danish Red Cross, the Policy Officer will work closely with technical and public affairs colleagues to ensure that the implementation of the climate advocacy strategy progresses and is well-coordinated with our policy engagement at the regional and country level. The Policy Officer will report to the Head of Humanitarian Policy & Analysis Unit, and work under the guidance of the Senior Humanitarian Policy Advisor and in close collaboration with colleagues in the DRC Public Affairs Team.

Main responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of the overall framework Danish Red Cross’ international policy work, with a particular focus on Danish Red Cross climate change policy engagement. This includes development of policy asks, positions and engagement plans and monitoring of their implementation, in coordination with International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) climate policy staff and the Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) Climate Centre;
  • Keep up to date on climate change policy developments and implementation with specific focus on adaptation, loss & damageand climate change driven displacements; and formulate action-oriented policy responses, briefings and policy positions in light of these;
  • Carry out climate policy analysis and ensure timely development of action-oriented position papers, policy briefings, presentations and other advocacy and communications materials;
  • Ensure that advocacy messages, documents and strategies are evidence-based, and draw on operational data and experiences;
  • Develop strategic partnerships with key actors to achieve our policy goals;
  • Play an active role in networking and representation of Danish Red Cross on climate change related events, conventions and media opportunities;
  • Identify key opportunities in the short and long-term where the Danish Red Cross can influence climate policy processes;
  • Support and advise thematic leads, technical advisors, regional and country level staff on policy engagement, positions and activities;
  • Support policy engagement of Danish Red Cross regional and country offices especially with regard to global/international policy processes and fora on climate change adaptation, loss & damage, anticipatory action and climate change driven displacement;
  • Provide talking points and other materials as needed for senior staff.

Profile

We expect that you have:

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field (political or social science, or similar)
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant work experience, including experience with policy analysis and implementation of organisational advocacy strategies;
  • Understanding of humanitarian issues and climate change agendas, and a good overview of relevant agenda setting policy forums, processes and frameworks, specifically related to UNFCCCs policy discussions, the Paris Agreement, , and the Sendai Framework;
  • Demonstrable experience and achievements working in and advocating towards multi-stakeholder platforms and processes;
  • Strong networking and partnership building skills;
  • Advanced and persuasive written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience from an NGO, UN or diplomatic representation is an advantage.

Moreover, you enjoy facilitating collaboration between many internal and external stakeholders and to advocate and negotiate to move agendas forward. Your ability to work independently, structured as well as your solid planning and organisational skills make you autonomous and effective. Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement, while good command of Danish and / or French is an advantage.

You can expect frequent travels and meeting activity and occasional work during evenings and weekends.

Your future work place

The Climate Policy Officer will report to the Head of Humanitarian Policy & Analysis in the International Department and work under the guidance of the Senior Humanitarian Policy Advisor and in close collaboration with technical and public affairs colleagues.

The Policy Officer will be employed by the Danish Red Cross, part of the world’s largest volunteer- based humanitarian network. Along with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and 192 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the Danish Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The Danish Red Cross is a member and volunteer-based organization with 202 local branches in Denmark and more than 30.000 volunteers, and with international programmes in Africa, Asia and the MENA region. Danish Red Cross also hosts the IFRC Psychosocial Reference Centre

The position is full-time, with 37 working hours per week, based in HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Salary and employment conditions will comply with Danish Red Cross’s collective bargain agreement with HK and AC with a monthly gross salary level between DKK 42.400 and 49.300 depending on experience and qualifications (including allowances and pension contribution). You will work out of the DRC HQ on Blegdamsvej 27 in Copenhagen. You can expect frequent travels and meeting activity and occasional work during the evenings or weekends.
