ABOUT THE CONSULTANCY ROLE

The UN Climate Change annual Conference of the Parties (COP 27), which will be held in Egypt in November 2022, will be an important moment for Amnesty International to influence decision makers, and to draw public attention to the human rights dimensions of the climate crisis. Amnesty’s Climate Justice team will be producing advocacy, campaign and communications materials ahead of the event and coordinating Amnesty’s in-person advocacy at the conference.

We are seeking a consultant to work with the team to prepare campaign, advocacy and research material both before and during the conference.

CONSULTANCY PURPOSE

In particular, the consultant will be required to undertake the following:

  • Monitor states’ positions and commitments ahead and during COP27, including by following remotely some negotiation sessions open to observer organisations
  • Prepare briefings on key areas of negotiation at COP27 of particular interest to Amnesty International
  • Carry out research tasks to support the work of the team
  • Assist with the planning of meetings and side-events
  • Assist with the preparation of campaign and communication material
  • Represent Amnesty International in civil society coalition meetings if required
  • Support Amnesty International’s climate researcher, campaigner, and Head of Team in other ad hoc research and writing tasks

TIMELINE: The consultancy will be three days per week for a period of three months (Sept-Oct-Nov).

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

The consultant will have at least two years’ experience of working for an international advocacy or campaigning organization, and a related Master’s or graduate degree is preferred. They will have experience of the following:

  • Experience working on climate justice issues,
  • Knowledge of the international human rights legal framework, particularly with respect to climate change
  • Experience carrying out policy and advocacy-oriented research
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to present complex concepts in a clear and easily digestible format

In addition, the consultant will have the following abilities:

Outstanding written and verbal English is essential; in addition, the ability to work to a high professional level in another widely-used language will be an advantage.
