The mission of the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is to promote and improve health by engaging residents, communities, and partners in establishing and implementing policies and services that prioritize residents and communities with the greatest need.

Role Summary

As an essential member of the Chicago Department of Public Health, “Public Information Office (PIO)” [Marketing/Communications], the Community Outreach Coordinator role will engage with CDPH program leads, other key CDPH staff, residents, communities, and partners using a health equity based approach that prioritize residents and communities with the greatest need. The Community Outreach Coordinator will develop, support, and implement community outreach activities that align with the Office of Community Engagement and Partnerships and the PIO to ensure the accuracy in distributed information; and build and maintain relationships with stakeholders in CDPH COVID-19 programs.

Essential Duties

Community Outreach Coordinator plans and coordinates program communications on the CDPH COVID-19 response to enhance the quality of services in the city communities and internal communications for CDPH staff. Connects with key stakeholders, collaborates with Information Coordinators, and follows up on program requests to ensure that responses are timely. Collaborates with the creative content team and supports drafting messaging and marketing content for CDPH’s monthly Community Newsletter to connect with community groups throughout the city, in particular in historically under-served communities, to understand the needs of these communities and to learn how CDPH can better connect and communicate with them. Assists in identifying, collecting, developing content and proofing information that supports the bi-weekly release of CDPH’s Commissioner’s Update sent to all staff, and supports/maintains a department-wide directory that connects CDPH to community members, partners, delegate agencies, CPDH Programs and other key stakeholders to increase awareness through communications, marketing, and communications; and foster existing and establish new relationships. Fulfills written requests for information on CDPH COVID-19 Response programs and other key stakeholders. Helps coordinate as needed/requested community meetings and town halls in collaboration with Community Engagement and Partnerships to provide information on City programs and services to promote community-oriented solutions to health disparities. Support the PIO, Community Engagement and Partnerships, programs, or other key stakeholders in organizing the department’s participation in special programs and events. Organizes community members to encourage involvement in Bureau-sponsored events and programs. Works to Initiates, develops, and maintains relationships with community members and organizations and other key stakeholders in order to learn from them what communications tactics and tools work best in their communities.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS

Education
Bachelor’s degree in the Social Sciences or a related field plus experience

Experience
Three (3) years of community or social services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
Valid State of Illinois driver’s license
Permanent use of insured automobile complying with City of Chicago insurance requirements, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability

Other Knowledge, Skills, Attributes, And Abilities
Knowledge in principles and practices of event coordination, community outreach, and communications
Understanding of social, developmental, cultural, economic, and legislative issues and trends impacting the community
Broad familiarity of City neighborhoods, community organizations, and leaders
Knowledge of particular needs, issues, and concerns of specific communities or groups
Familiar with applicable City and department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations

Reducing health inequities – working to reduce health disparities and provide information and services to communities of color hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic
Facilitating teamwork – promoting communication, cooperation, and identifying with overarching project goals
Connecting with communities internally at CDPH and externally – working to connect with and learn from communities we serve, in particular the needs, issues, and concerns of specific communities or groups (e.g., racial, ethnic, religious, low income, youth)

This position is funded by a federal grant. These funds may be extended, but CDPH cannot guarantee this position will be funded past July 2024.
