China Campaigner

This role can be based in London or South Korea (Seoul) or potentially, subject to risk assessment, an Amnesty International office in South East, or East Asia. Salary and benefits and terms and conditions will be dependent upon precise location of work.

JOB PURPOSE

You will be a key player in effecting positive change by leading in the development, implementation and monitoring of strategies for change campaigns on China for Amnesty International globally.

ABOUT YOU

You will be passionate about Human Rights with proven experience in developing campaigning strategies to inspire members and public to bring about change. You will also have strong research and communication skills, and extensive experience in coordinating actions with a knowledge of China’s thematic issues. You will have extensive knowledge of China, an up to date network of relevant contacts, strong investigation and communication skills. You will be committed to working in partnership with multiple actors including human rights defenders across the world. You will be both pragmatic and eager to innovate to achieve positive impact in a challenging, fast moving political environment.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

You will:

  • Lead the development of campaign strategies on China, taking advantage of political opportunities and internal teams within Amnesty International so that we achieve real change.
  • Assess opportunities for action and identify creative and effective campaigning tactics.
  • Keep abreast of new and innovative campaigning strategies and tactics. Provide advice and guidance to staff in other teams and within our Sections and Member bodies.
  • Be a strong communicator within the organization ensuring we are working to one agenda.
  • Utilise your monitoring and analytical ability to understand current political, human rights and civil society developments that feed into new campaign strategies.
  • Draft, review and advise campaign materials, ensuring products are coherent within the campaign strategy and help to communicate our campaign messages to a wide range of target audiences.
  • Represent Amnesty International EASPRO office, in governmental, inter-governmental and various public forums, civil society organizations and other actors.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

You will have:

  • Solid experience leading, developing, delivering and monitoring campaign strategies including at an international level;
  • Excellent understanding of strategic campaign methodologies, power analysis methodologies and other campaign development tools;
  • Strong knowledge of human rights issues in China, especially Mainland China, and experience working on country or thematic issues in the region;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English and Chinese;
  • Experience in managing budgets and reporting against expenditure;
  • Strong knowledge of digital platforms and tools, including fair knowledge of digital security;
  • Experience of using online and offline activism techniques to achieve innovative campaign objectives;
  • The ability to adapt to fast-changing political situations;
  • Ability to represent Amnesty International in a variety of forums, articulate public speaking skills;
  • Experience in writing motivating and inspiring materials for a diverse range of

  • Ability to work in multi-cultural environment with appropriate sensitivity to differences of culture, gender and physical ability;
