Overview

Save the Children’s Policy, Advocacy, and Campaigns- Government Relations department (PAC-GR) leads on developing evidence- based policy recommendations and targeted advocacy and campaign strategies for children most impacted by inequality and discrimination.. We work with political leadership and other duty-bearers to drive change in U.S. foreign policy, as well as relevant regional and international policies and practices that empower children and families around the world.

The Child Protection and Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies Policy and Advocacy fellow will support the policy and advocacy work of the PAC-GR Humanitarian Advocacy Team, primarily focused on increasing efforts to prevent, mitigate, and respond to gender-based violence experienced by children living in humanitarian settings, throughout the U.S. government’s foreign assistance work streams. You will have a U.S. foreign policy focus and will provide critical support to the team’s advocacy by tracking, analyzing, and contributing to the creation of advocacy products and execution of advocacy activities related to child protection and gender-based violence in emergencies. You may also be asked to contribute to the team’s crisis-specific policy and advocacy efforts as needed.

This fellowship will run from Tuesday, June 7 – Friday, August 5.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to information gathering, research, and analysis in relation to U.S. government foreign policy processes and advocacy opportunities.
  • Assist in conducting research on priorities and demonstrated interests of key decision-makers and influencers, such as U.S. government actors, including the new Administration and Congress, private sector actors, and peer organizations
  • Research and write content for background briefs, talking points, fact sheets, policy briefs, and communications materials, including social media content, in furtherance of Save the Children’s child protection and gender-based violence in emergencies advocacy objectives.
  • Assist in preparations and execution of strategic events, including internal and external facing workshops and meetings, as related to Save the Children’s child protection and gender-based violence in emergencies policy and advocacy efforts
  • Attend both internal and external meetings and events and assist in note-taking and follow up of action points
  • Contribute to Save the Children’s thought leadership on child protection and gender-based violence in emergencies policy and advocacy through strategic research efforts and policy analysis on specific policy questions as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Must be actively enrolled in MPP program at University of Michigan and eligible to complete the required internship
  • Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Highly organized, able to prioritize and multi-task within deadlines
  • Able to handle confidential and proprietary information appropriately and with discretion
  • Currently eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest, experience, and/or academic training in gender in emergencies, particularly related to gender-based violence, including ending child marriage;
  • Basic understanding of the U.S. government’s humanitarian assistance policy frameworks, structures, and process;
  • Knowledge and understanding of key issues and current trends in humanitarian policy and practice.
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English

Pay: $16/hour
