As a Member of the Executive Team, the Chief of Staff is a high-visibility strategic partner who supports the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Executive Team with planning and execution of strategic change initiatives across the organization. Extensive experience in international development. A strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate and adapts to emerging challenges and opportunities. Strong political and organizational intelligence. Works on complex issues where problems are not clearly defined and where fundamental principles do not fully apply. Translates business segment strategy into functional plans and guides execution of all aspects of global strategy, planning, monitoring and reporting; coordinate FHI 360’s global public policy efforts; and advance other major initiatives led by the Office of the CEO.

Accountabilities:

Global Strategy Planning and Execution:

  • Oversee FHI 360’s strategic planning process, working with subject matter experts to compile essential data and research and document all key outputs.

  • Facilitate and monitor the execution of the strategic plan by working collaboratively with the Executive Team.

  • Lead FHI 360’s approach to reporting and managing performance and impact metrics to determine success and any necessary adjustments.

Global Public Policy and Government Relations:

  • Ensure the coherence of FHI 360’s external policy positioning

  • Work effectively across the organization to identify and track opportunities which bring together research and evidence

  • Help shape and disseminate policy positions on issues central to our mission.

Office of the CEO:

  • Support major global initiatives, including the development of strategic alliances and partnerships, joint ventures and acquisitions.

  • Support the CEO with board relations, including meeting agendas and preparation, to enhance board engagement and focus.

Leadership:

  • Through everyday actions, contribute to an organizational culture of diversity, equity and inclusion and a commitment to social change, high performance, continuous improvement, and innovation.

  • Lead by example; establish clear expectations; set direction and priorities; ensure balanced work levels; resolve issues in a timely manner; keep stakeholders informed of all appropriate information; build effective cross-functional teams.

  • Build trust and partnership with other Executive Team members and key stakeholders across FHI 360 and its subsidiaries.

  • Performs other duties assigned.

Applied Knowledge & Skills:

  • Significant experience in strategic planning, including experience in the INGO sector.

  • Experience building and managing cross-functional teams and strong track record working across disciplines to create ownership and consensus.

  • Strong experience in policy and advocacy, especially with the use of data for evidence-based advocacy and thought leadership.

  • Strong planning, organization, facilitation and coordination skills working across units.

  • Deep networks in the international development industry in the United States (experience in the U.K. is a plus), including experience with the U.S. government in development and social services work, as well as familiarity with private funders such as corporations, foundations and philanthropists.

  • Knowledge of global health research, programming and advocacy

  • Experience in identifying and developing strategic alliances, partnerships and/or M&A opportunities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.

Supervision Given/Received:

  • Sets goals and budgets for projects and leads group in achieving strategic goals.

  • Leads coordination of resources for ongoing projects across functional areas and addresses/resolves project issues.

  • Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Education:

  • Master’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Civil Society, Communication and Social Marketing, Economic Development, Education, the Environment, Gender, Health, Nutrition, Research, Technology and Youth or a Related Field.

Experience:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 15+ years of progressive work experience in a nonprofit setting or similar for-profit setting, ideally one involving the management and oversight of grants, cooperative agreements and contracts funded by the U.S. government, multilaterals and other institutional donors

  • Typically requires a minimum 5+ years of experience in a senior management/leadership position.

  • French, Spanish and/or other foreign language proficiency is desirable.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Typical office environment.

  • Ability to spend long hours looking at computer screen and doing repetitive work on a keyboard.

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to move up to 5 lbs.

Technology to be Used:

  • Personal Computer, Microsoft Office 365 (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Skype/TEAMS, e-mail), office telephone, cell phone and printer/copier.

Travel Requirements:

  • 10 – 25%
