Position Summary… This position leads the company’s food safety programs, with responsibility to ensure that systems, procedures and controls are in place for the purpose of minimizing the company’s exposure to Food Safety risks from “farm to fork”, and inspiring a culture of food safety throughout the organization. This position is required to work closely with cross-functional teams across the business to design, develop and implement standards, procedures and internal controls, including monitoring activities, related to 1) food supplier approvals for national brands, private brands and direct imports; 2) logistics and transportation; 3) receiving, storing, preparing, processing, merchandising and dispensing of food at store level including online grocery. What you’ll do…

  • Initiates, designs and implements systems, procedures and controls for the purpose of minimizing the company’s exposure to Food Safety risks and inspiring a culture of food safety throughout the organization.
  • Responsible for food safety and compliance from supplier factory, through distribution centres, to handling and sale at store level, including omni, to customer (including associate education and training, operational procedures, food safety audit and accountability, etc). Provides expert opinion, advice, information, and guidance throughout operation on food safety matters, with goal being the prevention of both food borne illness and non-compliance with Canadian food safety regulations.
  • Directs the development, maintenance and execution of company food safety policies, standards and procedures, including operational integration of food safety and pest control, into all applicable areas of the business (stores, DCs, omni, merchandising, third parties).
  • Directs the design, implementation and execution of Walmart’s supplier food safety program, ensuring that suppliers and factories meet Walmart standards and mitigate risk of foodborne illness or non-compliance with Canadian regulations. This includes the development and execution of (i) supplier factory certification program; (ii) food specification requirements and third party testing; (iii) packaging and labelling compliance review program; (iv) preventive control plan to obtain and maintain import license(s) and (v) the tracking and handling of all food safety and compliance related complaints, including withdrawals and recalls.
  • Directs the development, maintenance and execution of Walmart’s operational food safety program, ensuring distribution centres, stores and OMNI meet Walmart standards and mitigate risk of foodborne illness or non-compliance with Canadian regulations. This includes development and maintenance of (i) a preventive control plan in the distribution centres; (ii) a store/OMNI food safety program that encompasses a HACCP based approach and includes, among other items, sanitation, hygiene, product segregation, pest control, temperature controls, recalls, training, awareness and monitoring.
  • Prepares and delivers company level reports and presentations communicating status of compliance initiatives to senior leadership, identifying risks and communicating and obtaining operational support for compliance initiatives
  • Articulates corporate positions on food safety matters to regulators and external agencies and directs involvement with regulators at federal, provincial and municipal levels to ensure operational compliance with all legal requirements. Coordinates, where appropriate, compliance division’s inputs to company responses to regulatory enquiries and investigations relating to food safety.
  • Develops external relationships and alliances strengthening the company’s reputation within compliance the community and leads regulatory outreach meetings, ensuring that the company’s food safety programs, policies, procedures and reports are communicated in a persuasive, accurate and understandable way and that sensitive data is protected
  • Drives operational compliance team involvement with global compliance team, developing relationships and ensuring that the company’s compliance programs, policies, procedures and reporting are consistent with global direction and leverage global talent and resources.

Qualifications

  • 8 to 10 years of experience in food safety (at a retail level is preferred)
  • MSc or BSc in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or other applicable food safety fields of study (MSc. is preferred)
  • Preferred candidate has experience across the various aspects of retail from supplier to logistics to stores including OMNI
  • Preferred candidate demonstrates knowledge and application of Preventive Control Plans, HACCP, provincial and federal regulations and requirements
