Campaigner, Business and Human Rights

Amnesty

BACKGROUND

The team sits within the Climate, Economic and Social Justice and Corporate Accountability programme. We are hiring two new campaigners to sit in our London office. One of these is a one year FTC. The second is a three year FTC.

Amnesty International’s Business and Human Rights team works towards a world where states pass and enforce meaningful regulations that protect citizens from the harmful actions of corporate actors; businesses take proactive steps to avoid causing, contributing or being linked to human rights abuses, and provide remedy to victims; and members of the public use their power as consumers to push for change.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Amnesty International is looking for two campaigners with experience of working on successful corporate accountability campaigns.

Candidates need to demonstrate knowledge of business and human rights, but their campaigning experience could cover related corporate accountability issues, such as tax justice, the environment, climate and corruption.

One of the roles we are recruiting for will work on our energy transition project, playing a key role in our campaign to ensure that electric vehicle and battery companies place respect for human rights at the centre of this growing industry.

The second role will work on our corporate crimes and accountability project, in which we seek to hold businesses to account for their role in human rights abuses and crimes.

Both campaigners will work closely with project leads, but be expected to be proactive in designing and coordinating the implementation of effective campaigns.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and coordinate the implementation of campaign and communications strategies and actions on Business and Human Rights across the Amnesty movement.
  • Coordinate the development and production of campaign, communications and briefing materials.
  • Facilitate effective and timely communications relating to campaigns, including handling inquiries coming from the membership, other NGOs and the public at large and responding or channelling inquiries as appropriate.
  • Assist in conducting research on Business and Human Rights.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of capacity building initiatives including training, in support of the work on business and human rights, across the Amnesty International movement.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with AI sections, NGOs and IGOs, in order to share information about the International Secretariat’s strategies and overall activities, and look for opportunities to build coalitions around those strategies.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least three years of professional experience of strategic campaigning on corporate accountability, (from the perspective of business and human rights, tax justice, climate, the environment, or related fields), including experience of strategic planning, developing campaigning objectives, monitoring their implementation; mobilizing diverse actors to a common goal.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Business and Human Rights, gained through relevant professional experience.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to express ideas in a clear and compelling manner in English both orally and in writing, and to communicate complex information and institutional positions in an accurate yet concise way.
