Academy of the Ruhr-University Bochum

Background

The University of Applied Sciences in Münster is one of the largest and most successful universities for applied sciences in Germany. Humanitarian relief has been a focus topic since more than 20 years. Besides other partners, the University is founding member of the academy for humanitarian action (aha), which provides advanced training courses for the humanitarian community.

On behalf of the University of Applied Sciences in Münster, the Academy of the Ruhr-University intends to commission external service providers to design and conduct an online training workshop on the topic “Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E)”. The event targets young and senior professionals in humanitarian action and other practitioners in relevant fields.

The training will be advertised and conducted under the umbrella of the academy for humanitarian action (aha).

We invite you to submit a written offer for the services described below by e-mail by May 22, 2023, at 12:00 noon (CEST).

Service Description: Online Training Workshop on the Topic “Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E)” (2 half days with 3 hours each)

Location, Time and Language:

Online course via zoom on October 5 and 6, 2023. The course should be delivered in English.

Objectives of the Workshop:

  • The participants know about standard procedures in breastfeeding protection and support in emergency settings.
  • They are able to reflect on the necessary measures for appropriate and safe complementary feeding as well as the management of formula feeding.
  • They are able to discuss the risks and the managing of inappropriate donations of breast milk substitutes.

Brief Description of Content:

In emergencies, the disruption of basic nutrition, health care, sanitation and social support services impairs the ability of caregivers to meet the nutritional needs of infants and young children. The support of improved feeding practices under these difficult circumstances should therefore be a prioritization for humanitarian preparedness and response. This includes not only optimal breastfeeding practices but also complementary feeding and artificial feeding if needed. In fragile contexts, uncontrolled distributions of breastmilk substitutes can undermine recommended breastfeeding practices during the emergency and beyond and must be carefully managed.

This short online training offers an introduction to recommended IYCF-E actions that protect and support optimal feeding practices. Participants should learn what interventions are needed in the humanitarian response to support caregivers in breastfeeding, in the preparation of nutritious and safe complementary foods, and in providing safe breastmilk substitutes. Other more specific topics could be: Possibilities of re-lactation or micronutrient supplementation. Additional content is welcome to be suggested. The methodology of the training should include different approaches, such as individual or group work, input from the trainer, open discussions or peer-to-peer exercises. Practical examples/case studies are highly appreciated.
