Salary: 43,237 – 50,579 commensurate with experience
Hours:35 hours per week; Additional evenings will be required to support the community meal program

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Cafeteria, Lead Hand is responsible for the operations of the on-site cafeteria. The Cafeteria, Lead Hand works in collaboration with and under the direction of the Food Services Manager in the planning, preparing and delivery of hot and cold meals for staff, volunteers, and groups attending Daily Bread. This includes the supervision and training of Kitchen Assistants and volunteers working in the kitchen. This position requires you to work on Thursday evenings to support the community meal program.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, adhere to, and maintain the menu for the cafeteria in collaboration with the Food Services Manager with a focus on healthy, nutritious meals.
- Incorporate donated product into the cafeteria menu wherever possible.
- Actively participate in and supervise Kitchen Assistants and volunteers in set up, service, and tear down of cafeteria and food preparation for 40 – 100 people on a daily basis.
- Actively participate in and supervise the maintenance and cleaning of the kitchen by volunteers and assistants in accordance with Public Health and WHMIS standards. This requires a willingness to wash dishes, clean equipment, sweep and mop as a team member.
- Ensure safe and proper food handling standards are adhered to by all volunteers and staff.
- Responsible for the closing of the kitchen, including shutting off equipment.
- Ensure that cafeteria activities adhere to budgeted food costs.
- Order and maintain food related inventory for the cafeteria. Ensure that all stock is rotated and adhere to “first in-first out” process.
- Deliver excellent customer service in the cafeteria.
- Maintain food and fridge / freezer temperature sheets.
- Supervise and inform volunteer group activities as required.
- Promote and engage in the development of volunteer and Assistants’ kitchen related skillsets.
- Demonstrate a high level of professionalism towards staff and volunteers.
- Perform any other kitchen duties that may be assigned from time to time.
INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
The Cafeteria, Lead Hand reports to the Food Services Manager. This position is part of the Kitchen team and works cooperatively with other departments in Daily Bread on an as-needed basis. On occasion the Cafeteria, Lead Hand; will work with other groups including staff of member agencies, volunteer during Food Drives and other fundraising activities, attend food shows to solicit and collect donations from vendors, and work with corporate volunteer groups as required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE (OR EQUIVALENT)
- Degree or diploma from known culinary institution.
- Minimum of five years’ experience within the food sector industry, preferably high volume and high-quality production.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Experience working in the not-for-profit sector.
- Experience working with volunteers, including those who may face challenges around mental, medical and/or social health or as newcomers to Canada an asset.
- Food Handling, WHMIS, and Nutrition knowledge / certificates an asset.
- Customer service experience an asset.
- Driver’s licence an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position works in an industrial kitchen with a connected cafeteria beside a busy warehouse. There is a shared office.
- This is a physically demanding job. There is constant standing, bending, and stretching; a need to operate a manual pump truck to move skids of unprepared and prepared food (training will be provided), going into walk-in fridges and freezers for short periods of time, and a requirement to lift to 50 lbs.
- The shift is normally Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, however this schedule may be changed from time to time to include evenings and weekends to support our organisation needs.
