About the role

We are seeking a talented and experienced Business Development Officer to join our dynamic team. As a Business Development Officer, you will play a vital role in securing funding for our organisation’s initiatives and projects aimed at addressing humanitarian, development and peacebuilding challenges around the world. Your exceptional writing skills and persuasive abilities will be instrumental in crafting compelling proposals that effectively communicate our mission, vision, and impact to potential donors and clients, as well as responding to the specific needs and requirements identified by prospective clients in their Requests for Proposals and Terms of Reference. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact by contributing to the growth and success of our efforts to provide effective monitoring, evaluation, research and learning services to our clients.

Salary: £30,000 – £34,000

Contract Type: Full-Time

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Person Specification

Research and Analysis: 10%

  • Conduct thorough research on potential funding opportunities, donors, and grant-making organisations in the humanitarian, development and peacebuilding sectors.
  • Analyse and evaluate the requirements, guidelines, and priorities of funding agencies to align proposal content and strategies accordingly.

Proposal Development: 50%

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including program managers, subject matter experts, and finance personnel, to gather information and develop comprehensive project proposals.
  • Write clear, concise, and persuasive proposals, ensuring that they are compliant with the guidelines and requirements of each funding opportunity.
  • Develop innovative and impactful approaches to present project objectives, methodologies, outcomes, and sustainability plans.
  • Create and compile supporting documents, such as budgets, annexes, project timelines, and monitoring and evaluation plans, to enhance proposal quality.

Editing and Proofreading: 20%

  • Review and edit proposal drafts for clarity, coherence, consistency, grammar, and adherence to proposal guidelines.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure all proposal components are accurate, cohesive, and well-integrated.

Relationship Management: 10%

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with funding agencies, donors, and partners to gather insights and intelligence that inform proposal strategies.
  • Coordinate and communicate with internal stakeholders to gather information and clarify requirements for proposal development.

Proposal Tracking and Reporting: 10%

  • Maintain a comprehensive database of proposals, funding opportunities, and outcomes to track progress and inform future proposal development.
  • Contribute to post-proposal reporting, including capturing lessons learned and best practices for continuous improvement.

Qualification and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., English, Communications, International Development, or a related discipline). A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Proven experience in proposal writing and a track record of winning proposals, particularly in the humanitarian or non-profit sector.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex ideas and concepts in a compelling manner.
  • Strong research and analytical skills to gather relevant information and synthesise it into coherent proposals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.
  • Familiarity with donor requirements and guidelines, such as USAID, UN agencies, FCDO, foundations, and other funding entities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and meet tight deadlines.
  • Highly organised with exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to humanitarian work and social impact.
