Medical College of Wisconsin

Position Description:

Every great life-changing discovery begins the same way—with new knowledge. It can change everything, from a single life to the future of entire communities. That’s why academic medicine, and the continuous pursuit of knowledge, is at the center of everything we do at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

In the role of Bioinformatics Analyst II working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center (GSPMC) is seeking an addition to their highly productive Bioinformatics and Data Analytics Unit (BDAU) that services internal and external clinical and research partners. Genomics is revolutionizing the medical practice through the expansive use of high-throughput sequencing tests. Further, GSPMC is pioneering team science and dedicated to advancing research in genomics and epigenomics. Bioinformatics is the key to turning data into actionable knowledge through processing clinical and research Service Line samples, developing new testing methodologies, and to improving interpretation of genetic variants.

The successful candidate will join a highly productive team in the development of new methodologies for the interpretation of celluar processes and novel genetic variants, using a systems biology approach. They will be cross-trained in our bioinformatics workflows, including exome, genome, RRBS, and RNAseq, and would also contribute to the development of future service lines in areas of DNA, RNA, and epigenetic NGS. Therefore, prior experience in the analyses of a combination of NGS data types is required, and epigentic data types such as ATAC, ChIP, and mRNA-Seq is preferred. Experience in multi-omics integration and visualization is preferred. Our pursuit is systems biology using multi-Omics technologies, to transform data into knowledge that helps us understand disease states and the progression from healthy to dysfunctional or dysregulated cellular processes.

At the BA-II level, successful candidates will demonstrate their experience through completed research studies, other externally-recognized metrics of productivity, or other relevant demonstration of expertise particularly for interpreting the results of research analyses and communicating them clearly to the team.

This Bioinformatics Analyst would be expected to maintain current knowledge of the literature, upholding and proactively improving analysis methods for contributions to portfolio of research projects and publications.

Responsibilities :

Understands principles of NGS data, sequencing, and the interpretation of results. Independently provides troubleshooting for data generation and processing. Implements triaging and generates reports.

Support and take lead on service lines that are not fully developed or are novel and needed for our research.

Develops, implements, and refines bioinformatic workflows and tools for analyzing and visualizing data including relevant QA/QC metrics.

Leads analysis for a portfolio of projects including implementing methods. Contributes to collaborative research publications. Presents regular project updates at meetings with collaborators.

Adapts bioinformatics tools, visualization packages, and annotation resources for research projects to independently and accurately perform research analysis. This includes workflow automation.

Maintains a professional level of knowledge of genetics and at least one focused topic related to NGS-based systems biology needed for the candidate’s research projects, to maintain state-of-the-art analyses and workflows.

Works with database and system administrators to implement and optimize methods for data input, storage, retirival, and reporting for APIs and data access portals.

Operates, and troubleshoots, and improves analytic tools; notifies Supervisor when complex problems occur.
