Bioinformatician- Malaria & Infectious Disease

Uses professional bioinformatics concepts. Applies computational procedures to resolve a variety of analysis and research issues, primarily related to processing and analysis of next-generation sequence (NGS) data related to pathogen genomics. Also implements or modifies existing algorithms to analyze genetic data in the context of spatial, transmission, or other epidemiologic contexts, including population genetics and longitudinal data. Presents visualizations of data or results from processed data.

The Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is an internationally recognized global leader in clinical care, research, and education. With its home-base located at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), the Division has been ranked as the top facility in the country for AIDS care for over a decade. The Division’s work is featured frequently in the media, and it is often visited by numerous international, national, state, and local dignitaries and delegations. The Division consists of approximately 36 faculty members and 170 academic and staff employees. It is the largest Division of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at ZSFG.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and 1-2 years of directly relevant programming experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures.
  • Working knowledge of applications programming and web development.
  • Working knowledge of databases.
  • Working project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.
  • Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of application and data security concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of genomics and the limitations / common sequencing errors from associated laboratory techniques.
  • Hands on experience performing next-generation sequencing and/or genotyping.
  • Experience using Python programming language.
