JOB SUMMARY:
CARE USA has embarked on an ambitious transformational agenda to measurably impact 200M lives through an approach that is Gender Equal, Locally Led, and Globally Scaled. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, Strategy, and Transformation, the AVP, Strategy will work regularly with the global leadership team to set vision, strategy, and drive outcomes. The AVP will lead the Strategy and Incubation team, overseeing all aspects of strategy development, incubation, and performance.
A future thinker and strategist, the AVP will constantly “scan the horizon” for trends and changes that could impact the future of development and humanitarian response and bring a strong network across sectors. The AVP will be rigorous in the pursuit of delivering results and performance excellence.
This is a dynamic role with high visibility across the organization, the Board, and the global Confederation. The successful candidate will have a strong ability to influence, a track record of managing high-impact, diverse teams, and a quick ability to build credibility and gain the confidence of individuals at all levels.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic thought leadership and planning
- Leverage best-in-class strategy development processes to develop, manage, and evolve the
CARE USA Strategy - Design and lead 5-year and annual strategic planning processes
- Conduct periodic reviews with the Global Leadership Team to evaluate current market and competitive insights to identify strategic adjustments and enhancements to strategy.
- Design strategic “deep dives” to engage the Global Leadership Team and occasionally the Board of Directors
- Develop documents to facilitate cross-divisional and cross-functional team discussions, as well as communicate with senior leadership
- Serve as a strategic coach and thought partner to other leaders across the organization
- Identify strategic risks both internally and externally that may impact the success of the strategy
Organizational performance management leadership
- Oversee a team that partners with programmatic and functional Chiefs / Vice Presidents to translate CARE’s strategy into business plans, targets, and strategic initiatives
- Support the organization to measure the right things and design quarterly performance processes that emulate simplicity and change effectiveness
- Assess initiative performance and oversee team to prepare Executive presentations, including results and trends
- Oversee team on benchmarking and other market research
- Partner with the People and Culture team to ensure strategic goals cascade into individual performance goals
Strategy incubation leadership
- Provide vision to shape and direct the strategy incubation and strategic pillars portfolio team, ensuring maximum alignment with CARE’s broader transformation goals
- Provide guidance and inputs across the portfolio to ensure effective delivery of results
- Raise visibility on CARE’s scaling pathways, gender equal and locally led initiatives and impact results by supporting the development of external thought leadership pieces, ensuring relevance of positions and supporting fact base
- Work with team leadership, in consultation with programmatic, regional, and country office leadership, to support the development, implementation, and communication of portfolio of goals and strategies
Other Responsibilities as Assigned
- Support the CEO, Global Leadership Team, and Board of Directors across special projects
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors Degree
- At least 15 years experience that combines strategic and managerial leadership in a large international development and/or private sector organization
- At least 5 years of direct supervision of a significant team
- At least 3 years experience in international development or humanitarian response with a preference for experience that includes international work
- Exceptional acumen and credibility in the fields of strategic planning, data analysis, executive level communication, project management, cross cultural communication.
