Context:

This position is located in the French Translation Unit within the Translation Service (TRS), which is part of the Governing Bodies Secretariat. TRS is in charge of translating IOM’s official documents into Spanish and French, either internally or externally, and provides outsourcing services for other non-official languages.

Under the direct supervision of the Translator (French), the Associate Translator (French) will be accountable and responsible for supporting translation services/support covering a broad range of documents and subjects dealt with by the Organization.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Subject to revision and within a specific timeframe, translate mainly from English, but also from Spanish into French various documents, including reports, conference documents, official correspondence, publications and other material pertaining to migration and other related subjects.
  2. Conduct terminology and other related research on the subject matters.
  3. Systematically check terminology, references and in-house linguistic guidelines.
  4. Keep abreast of new translation technologies and support the management of the French Translation Unit’s CAT tools, as required.
  5. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in Translation or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of experience in translation, preferably in the United Nations common system or in a comparable international organization; or,
  • University degree the above fields with four years of experience in translation, preferably in the United Nations common system or in a comparable international organization.

Experience

Experience in the use of standard CAT tools, word processing software, and ability to use computer based terminological and information tools.

Skills

  • Excellent linguistic and translation skills;
  • Excellent drafting ability in French;
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly integrate and use migration and other specialized terminology, including terminology used in other UN agencies;
  • Ability to keep abreast of the evolving linguistic specificities of the French language;
  • Knowledge of terminological and reference research techniques; and,
  • Understanding of the subject matter dealt with by the Organization.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

External applicants for all positions in the Professional category are required to be proficient in English and have at least a working knowledge of one additional UN Language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

For all applicants, perfect command of French (mother tongue) and excellent knowledge of English and Spanish is required. Working knowledge of of other languages will be considered an asset.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Competencies will be assessed during a competency-based interview.

Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances.
