Join our Geotechnics, GIS and Geospatial team in either Birmingham, Warrington or Manchester as an Associate Technical Director and we’ll make sure you get the experience and personalised learning support you need to take your career as far as you want it to go.
Our Geotechnics, GIS and Geospatial team is involved in some of the UK’s most high profile, complex and stimulating projects that are diverse and technically demanding. We have an enviable reputation in the delivery of some of the UK’s and indeed the world’s most prestigious and challenging projects.
Our current client portfolio includes the Highways England, Transport for London, Local Authorities, the Environment Agency, Canal & Rivers Trust, Water Companies, Network Rail and selected Civil Engineering Contractors for whom we undertake the planning, design and supervision of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology schemes. These include, managed motorways, harbours, ports, tunnels, water treatment plants, reservoirs, rail electrification, rail improvements, station upgrades and structures across a wide range of geological conditions and UK and European locations.
We are now looking to recruit an Associate Technical Director who has both technical and managerial experience in the sphere of ground engineering and design to join our growing Geotechnics, GIS and Geospatial business predominately working within our Water, Highways, Aviation and Rail sectors, but also working on a wide portfolio of schemes throughout the UK.
You will be accountable for leading, managing and developing the team in to deliver projects locally and nationally. The role will involve building relationships with clients, controlling technical and commercial aspects of projects together with developing and leading team members to their full potential.
Role accountabilities:
- Implementing the company’s strategy and vision and the function’s business and marketing plan
- Providing technical direction to the team, leading by example to achieve sector/discipline goals and championing a quality, innovative, client-focused and entrepreneurial culture
- Proactively managing selected projects or components of projects, taking responsibility for resource allocation, managing subcontractors and sub-consultants, quality assurance, health and safety and client feedback and ensuring effective communication of any changes/modifications
- Directing and working in collaboration with other design disciplines to ensure the integrity of the overall design
- Providing both leadership and technical support and advice to project team members
- Managing the production of analysis and design and ensuring compliance in the components of the project for which you have responsibility, including drawings, reports, specifications and studies
- Identifying opportunities and driving implementation of re-engineering strategies to maximise the profitability of design components
- Gaining a good understanding of the background of the client’s business and industry to facilitate building effective and enduring relationships and consolidating both company and personal credibility in the industry
- Responsible for all commercial aspects (contract, invoicing, debt management, client management etc) relating to projects for which you have responsibility to ensure a successful outcome.
- Liaising with the Project Director or Manager and the client to keep informed of all developments associated with the project
- Taking a proactive role in developing team members to their full potential
- Communicating and directing team members to ensure that they understand, and become engaged with, sector/discipline business plans
- Being familiar, compliant and able to undertake duties under the relevant H&S regulations and to promote a culture of awareness within the team
- Performing other duties and responsibilities as required from time to time by your manager or Arcadis
- Coordination with SEm, SHE/CDM/GIS Engineering Management functions
Qualifications & Experience:
Minimum Academic Qualifications:
- Geology or Civil Engineering first degree.
- Professionally Qualified (CGeol, MICE, MIMM)
- Desirable Academic Qualifications – MSc/ PhD qualified in a ground related subject.
Essential Experience:
- Experienced in all stages of the projects, from initial feasibility through to construction supervision and advice
- Experienced as team leader or manager and supervising more junior members of staff
- To have a professional profile and reputation within the industry at a local level
- Experienced with preparation of geotechnical / engineering geology aspects of bids and business development
- Proven experience on large multi-disciplinary projects preferably in the UK
- Experience in earthworks design, specification and implementation
- Experience in foundation design, retaining wall design, slope stability analysis and the production of detailed design drawings and specifications
- Expertise in the use of commercial geotechnical software and design tools
- Experience in ground investigation design and implementation
- Client facing with good motivational and people management skills with an ability to influence staff and clients particularly regarding technical issues
- Be able to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and experience with regards to commercial aspects of projects
- Team player, self-starter and a problem solver i.e. “Can-do” attitude
