This position is located in the External Relations and Partnerships Section (ERPS) of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Geneva. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

The Associate Information Management Officer reports to the Humanitarian Affairs Officer (P4).

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Information Management Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Systematically aggregates and presents information, including financial data, from a wide
variety of UN, NGO, and international organization sources and collaborates with internal and external actors in the collection of data, preparation and the design and preparation of presentations, tables, charts, data sets, and/or graphics to facilitate in-depth analysis.

• Visualization: Assists in the production and updating of information products such as reports, charts and infographics by turning data into compelling digital features to convey messages and a storyline; develops advocacy materials including posters, presentations, animations and other visual materials. Coordinates other design and graphics consultants to deliver multiple products.

• Data Management: Supports the consolidation and presentation of operational and funding information to support analysis. Supports technical staff in the development of templates, applications to facilitate the collection and presentation of context specific humanitarian and development data and information. Participates in the development and revision of data and design standards.

• Maps and other visuals: Supports the production and updating of high-quality map products and multimedia; maintains a repository of photographic data and ensures that the data are documented and accessible to donors and partners through local and/or online services. Maintains and shares branding, style-guides and other guidance for field and HQ IMOs.

• Performs other related duties, as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in information management, information systems, social sciences or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in information management, information systems, web management, data management, GIS and mapping, data visualization, or other related area, is required.

Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign is required.

Field experience in Information Management (actual setting where a mission and/or project is being implemented) in emergency situations (complex emergency or natural disaster) is desirable.

Experience in collecting and researching data, especially related to humanitarian financing, across various areas of humanitarian assistance, social economic development or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and the availability of the funds.
