The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide.

This position is located in the Office of the Director (OoD) of the United Nations Global Service Centre in Brindisi, Italy.

The Data Specialist will report to the Senior Administrative Officer, and will be the primary enabling capacity for data-driven decision making by the Director of the UNGSC.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Data Analyst will be responsible for the following duties:

• Develop process improvement mechanisms for data analytics tasks and ensure technically sound execution of data analytics projects
• Acquire and clean data from primary or secondary sources and maintain databases/data systems
• Implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality
• Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns, using basic machine learning techniques, statistical methods to identify relevant features and variables in structured sources of information and data
• Translate organizational needs into analytics and reporting requirements to support decisions, strategies and workflows with data and information
• Develop reports, dashboards or other tools to effectively summarize findings and convey information to management
• Collaborate with colleagues across the UNGSC Services to identify data analytics needs and support data-driven projects
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, information management, public administration, management or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in applied analytics, business intelligence, information management, statistics, project management, stakeholder management or related area, or the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP)/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required.

Experience in using data to advance decisions, strategies and execution is required.

Experience with self-service analytics and data visualization applications (MS PowerBI, Qlik, Tableau or similar), or business intelligence tools (SAP Business Objects, etc.) is required.

Experience in tools managing version control such as Git is desirable.

Experience with database or programming languages (SQL, Python, R) is desirable.

Experience with UN Enterprise Data Management Platforms is desirable.
