AUAF Background

The American University of Afghanistan is Afghanistan’s only nationally accredited, private, not-for- profit, non-partisan, and coeducational institution of higher education. It opened its doors in 2006 with an initial enrollment of 50 students, and since that time has grown to enroll more than 1,700 full- and part-time students across undergraduate, graduate, and professional training programs. Despite a changing political and security climate in Afghanistan, AUAF has successfully lived up to its mission to provide equal access to high-quality higher education across gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic background.

Nearly half of our undergraduate students are female, and generous support from the U.S. government and other funding partners as allowed us to support a secure, inclusive, residential campus environment in Kabul. Position Summary

The Associate/Assistant/Instructor Professor of Finance is a contractual full-time faculty position (non-tenure track) reporting to the Chair of the Business Department. This position requires teaching four courses in the Business Department at BBA and MBA levels. Additional course overloads may be assigned by the department chair as per university policy. In addition to teaching duties, the faculty will be providing service to the university, student advisory services and any administrative work related to the business department as determined by the Chair of the department. The faculty will be evaluated based on course delivery, content submission, use of Learning Management Systems e.g. Canvas and other online educational tools and platforms e.g. Perusall, EdPuzzle, the ability to work in teams and ensuring compliance with overall university policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote the philosophy, mission and vision of AUAF.
  • Provide engaging, enthusiastic and student-centered teaching to students from Afghanistan.
  • Teach 24 credits per year at BBA and MBA levels as determined by the Chair of the department
  • Specifically focus on Finance related courses to ensure up-to-date content, reference material, teaching methodologies are utilized for the students
  • Provide student advisory services to ensure timely and quality completion of their degree plan
  • Provide service to the university in terms of business department related tasks and initiatives
  • Ensure ethical conduct of students in the classroom and strict implementation of university ethics code regarding any academic misconduct
  • Establish a professional classroom atmosphere that encourages mutual respect.
  • Contribute to a collegial, collaborative and positive attitude to the university campus.
  • Understand and convey the essentials of the course discipline that students should master.
  • Maintain high academic standards while demonstrating equitability and fairness.
  • Work successfully and productively in a team environment with other faculty.
  • Perform the necessary duties of an instructor to ensure quality instruction.
  • Establish productive and supportive communication with students.
  • Prepare and comply with the course syllabus following the university-approved format and course content.
  • Be organized and conduct classes in accordance with the published class schedule.
  • Evaluate student progress through regularly scheduled assessments/exams.
  • Promptly return graded work to students and maintain student grade records.
  • Remain engaged and updated in the academic profession and in the discipline.
  • Perform the necessary duties of a full-time Instructor to ensure quality instruction.
  • Maintain competency.
  • Maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position and the institution.
  • Hold regular office hours and work with individual students, acting as academic mentor.
  • Responsible for assigned administrative duties of the Business Department
  • Remain engaged and current in the academic profession and in their disciplines.
  • Remain scholarly active, contributing scholarship that goes beyond professional engagement to include the creation of intellectual products that are available to internal and/or external audiences.
  • Contribute to the overall well-being and development of the university.
  • Closely involved in any program review at the department level
  • Work to maintain the Business Department Accreditation and to ensure full compliance
  • Attend all department-related meetings as determined by the Chair of the department
  • Attend relevant university level meetings as well as represent the business department when necessary as determined by the Chair of the department
  • Work to provide any meaningful industry relations for the Business Department under the supervision of the Chair of the department
  • Service to the university includes both internal activities and external outreach on the behalf of the institution.
  • Service can take many forms, including fostering collegiality, participating in the life of the university, assisting in curriculum review, participating actively in committee work, developing the capacity of external stakeholders on the behalf of AUAF, consulting and grant-writing for the university and service to the external community.

Required Qualification, Experience and Skills:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Economic and Finance
  • Applicants with an MBA and extensive industry experience will also be considered. Relevant industrial experience is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to promoting an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.
  • Have international experience and preferably 2 years working experience in Qatar.

Other Skills

  • Familiar with LMS such as Canvas
  • Use of Learning Management Systems and the commitment to learn any online educational tools required to ensure a greater educational experience for the students
