Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative assistance to its Asia Division. The Asia Division works to advance human rights in Asia and conducts a wide range of work, including investigation, report writing, advocacy and media work. This is a 6-month fixed-term position to provide leave coverage, and will preferably be based in the Washington, DC office, reporting to the Asia Advocacy Director. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will begin this position in January 2023.

Due to Covid-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely until offices fully re-open. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide day-to day administrative support to Asia Division staff, such as scheduling, making travel arrangements, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, creating and maintaining extensive filling and archiving systems, processing mail, maintaining country advocacy contact databases, and responding to requests for information;

2. Maintain communication among all staff locations, headquarters, and other HRW offices in order to ensure efficient support to the Asia Division;

3. Assist with preparing, drafting, proofreading, editing, formatting, translations, and distributing materials, such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op eds, publications, and web content;

4. Coordinate and support US government advocacy, including scheduling official meetings, managing subscriptions, building and maintaining contact databases, and assisting with advocacy Campaigns;

5. Attend external working-group meetings and represent HRW at meetings and events, including with researchers and other colleagues;

6. Conduct desk research, news monitoring, electronic clippings, and wires;

7. Assist with planning and executing roundtables and special events with visitors, NGOs, and government officials;

8. Coordinate and consult with Asia management team and division staff to create meaningful internship plans for seasonal interns; recruit, onboard, and manage day-to-day supervision of interns;

9. Record, track, and process divisional finances in a timely manner; and

10. Carry out other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in international studies, social science, political science, Asian studies, or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; fluency in an Asian language is preferred.

3. Strong interest in international human rights is required.

4. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.

5. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.

6. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.

7. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.

Other: Candidates must possess valid work authorization for the office location in which they would be based; HRW is unable to sponsor work permits for this role.

Salary and Benefits: If based in the United States, the salary range for this position is $52,000- 56,415. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, a retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year. Salary ranges outside of the United States vary based on location.
