Project Description:

NJOR (New Jersey Office for Refugees) is conducting statewide needs assessments under the Refugee School Impact (RSI) program to identify the critical needs of young refugee, Afghan parolee, and humanitarian entrant children and their families in New Jersey. The assessments will determine the needed educational and social services relating to the RSI program’s goals of academic and social integration. These services include child care and early childhood education, assistance with enrolling in and adjusting to pre-school and K-12 schools, academic support, social-emotional support, support with Individualized Education Plans, and out-of-school time programming. The Assistant, RSI Needs Assessment will provide overall administrative support for the project and will report to the Education Programs Manager.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Engage in background research and planning necessary for the completion of the needs assessment
  • Collaborate with the NJOR Education Programs Manager and other stakeholders such as refugee-serving agencies, community groups, and clients on the research design plan
  • Schedule meetings with stakeholders relating to needs assessment tasks and assist in logistics for these meetings (in-person and online)
  • Identify key target populations such as socioeconomic, public/private/non-profit institutions and service providers
  • Perform content analysis of available research and news on refugee and humanitarian families in New Jersey
  • Conduct interviews with refugee and humanitarian entrant families and as well as key informants in the community
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Current BA or MA college student strongly preferred
  • Fluency in Haitian Creole, Dari, Pashto and/or Farsi strongly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with refugees, asylees and other immigrants
  • Demonstrated professionalism when engaging with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work well with a culturally diverse staff
  • Prior experience with qualitative and quantitative research a plus
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to travel to select interview and meeting sites independently
