The JPMorgan Chase legal department is responsible for providing legal services to the corporation and is organized by practice groups that generally align with the corporation’s lines of business and corporate staff areas. This structure encourages legal teams, businesses and staff areas to discuss legal, regulatory and business developments effectively and in a timely manner.

Merchant Services is a line of business within JPMorgan’s Payments business, and is a global merchant acquirer that provides payment processing services (authorizations, conveyance and settlement of transactions involving credit and debit cards, electronic checks and other payment methods) to more than 286,000 merchants in the United States, Canada, and Europe and settles more than $1 trillion in merchant sales per year. Merchant Services is one of the largest merchant acquirers by volume in the United States and is a leading provider of payment, fraud and data security for companies large and small, capable of authorizing transactions in more than 130 currencies.

We are currently searching for an Assistant General Counsel to support the Payments business, including Merchant Services. The position will be preferably located in Plano, Texas, but candidates in Chicago, Illinois and Wilmington, Delaware will also be considered. The role will be heavily focused on transactional work, including the negotiation of commercial contracts with large retail and online merchants, and also involves advising the business on a wide range of legal and business issues . You will join a successful, well established team of professionals, and will be provided with training and continued on the job support when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting and negotiating various agreements related to the Merchant Services business
  • Advising business leaders on legal and business risks relating to customer support, sales, product development, marketing, data use and privacy, and various business initiatives
  • Providing strategic and legal advice regarding products and business initiatives, customer disputes and relationship matters, with an emphasis on pragmatic, risk-mitigating solutions
  • Collaborating with other functional partners within the business (credit, risk, product, finance, compliance, controls, etc.) to ensure appropriate escalation, awareness and consideration of risks and decisions
  • Coordinating with legal department members in other lines of business on a variety of legal, regulatory and business matters that may impact the business
  • Participating in cross line of business initiatives/practice groups as a subject matter expert on various specialized topics

Qualifications

In addition to the requisite legal credentials and experience, candidates should possess:

  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house
  • Attorney must be licensed to practice law and a member in good standing in in the state/jurisdiction in which the position is based or otherwise in compliance with the in-house counsel registration rules of that state/jurisdiction
  • Strong legal and technical drafting skills
  • Transactional and negotiating experience
  • A proven ability to comfortably operate in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • The confidence to be outspoken when necessary
  • Ability to find simple, practical solutions to complex problems.
  • The perseverance and patience necessary to work through ambiguity and see a matter through to completion
  • The ability to see past the question and understand the wider strategy
  • The ability to think tactically to get to the best result for all parties
  • Ability and willingness to engage at a granular level on matters requiring long-term focus on complex commercial transactions.
  • Prior experience in the financial services or payments industries would be a significant plus
