Position Summary

Provides legal counsel to Xcel Energy and management of Xcel Energy legal services, including outside counsel. Handles complex legal matters on a regular basis, oftentimes requiring creative solutions to challenging legal issues. Viewed as an expert within the company and legal community in designated practice area. Seeking an attorney with a strong background in environmental law, especially Clean Air Act matters, and including compliance, permitting, real property transactions, litigation, and enforcement actions. The ideal candidate should have environmental regulatory experience across all major environmental programs (e.g., CWA, CAA, ESA, RCRA, CERCLA, BGEPA etc.), transactional experience and litigation experience, with an emphasis on Clean Air Act and remediation/contamination-related experience. The candidate should also have experience in administrative agency law and regulation. Experience with coal ash, PCBs, Manufactured Gas Plants, emerging contaminants of concern, and various energy plants (coal, nuclear, wind, solar, gas, biomass, etc.) is a plus.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and counsel to Xcel Energy management on complex legal, business, legislation, regulation and strategic matters.
  • Prepares contracts, pleadings, briefs and other documents for business transactions or legal proceedings.
  • Represents Xcel Energy in courts, regulatory agencies and other adjudicatory or adversarial proceedings.
  • May serve in a lead role to provide overall practice expertise and direction of attorneys within area of expertise. May act as primary point of contact for business areas.
  • Providing legal advice and ensuring compliance with environmental laws, regulations and permits.
  • Providing advice on environmental contracts, including waste services contracts, access agreements and consultant contracts, various types of contracts with environmental risk, and assisting with environmental due diligence in connection with acquisitions.
  • Assisting in setting strategy on environmental matters, including climate policy and remediation activities.
  • Defending Company, managing outside counsel, and budgeting matters in environmental litigation or enforcement.

Minimum Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree from ABA accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice in state where position is located.
  • 10+ years of practice in corporate law department, law firm, government practice or equivalent legal experience.
  • Leadership experience required.
  • Specialized experience with Clean Air Act matters. (preferred)

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $151,000 to $214,333 per year
