Role Overview

The Assistant Director oversees and manages Tulane Hillel’s student generated and led programming. This restructured position on our team is someone who students gravitate toward. You will partner with our Executive Director, Ron Gubitz, to set the vision for all programming and lead the program staff team of four Fellows and our Tulane Jewish Leaders (students) to deliver exceptional programs. The Assistant Director will be a compelling presence at the majority of programs, many of which take place in the evenings, Friday night, and Sundays.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the Program Team of two to four early-career staff members
    • Hire, onboard, and evaluate program staff members through regular supervision meetings and provide coaching regarding job performance and professional development
    • Create and refine systems and structures to ensure exceptional programming
    • Coordinate the program calendar
    • Oversee multiple student interns (eg. data, marketing, Shabbat)
    • Collect, analyze, and report on student engagement data throughout the year
  • Lead Tulane Jewish Leaders (TJL), our student-generated signature programming initiative
    • Support Program Team in providing hands-on assistance to approximately 300 student mentees. You will also have a portfolio of students.
    • Ensure compelling marketing, student communications, and strong attendance at over 125 initiatives throughout the academic year
  • Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team
    • Contribute to setting vision and upholding organizational values
    • Communicate and cooperate effectively in fundraising and building operations
    • Manage the program team budget
    • Foster and maintain relationships with community partners including university student groups, university administrators, community non-profits, and the Board
  • Plan and execute Shabbat and Jewish Holidays
    • Supervise our Jewish Education Professional to partner with student organizations for Shabbat
    • Coordinate with our in-house kosher restaurant for meals and catering
    • Create meaningful and engaging pluralistic holiday observances and rituals

What You’ve Accomplished

  • Held a leadership position in previous professional experiences (formally or informally)
  • Have coached, mentored, and/or formally managed other adults in a professional capacity
  • Approximately 5-6 years of professional working experience
  • Experience executing programming in another communal setting
  • Successfully worked on and with a team that regularly meets and exceeds goals
  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Authentic relationship building skills, particularly with college students – You get energy from meeting new people and would greatly enjoy working with our students to see their initiatives come to life. You bring enthusiasm, energy, and joy to programs you’re leading and feel comfortable in front of groups, particularly students. You are up to date on communication and social media trends and build genuine relationships with others, including college age students and your colleagues.
  • Collaborative approach to work – You are a life-long learner who solicits and is open to feedback, believe you always have something new to learn or grow in, and enjoys working with a team to accomplish a goal.
  • Goals and outcomes driven – You thrive in setting clear, ambitious goals and working hard to meet them. You have a strength around creating clarity of a big vision for yourself and others and helping to ensure everyone is working toward shared goals.
  • A shared commitment to Tulane Hillel’s mission and values – Everyone at Tulane Hillel needs to work toward creating a highly-inclusive environment in service of our students. Someone in this role doesn’t need to be Jewish but you do need fluency of Jewish holidays, customs, and values, and share an enthusiastic curiosity to learn more.

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $65,000-$80,000 annually. Starting salary will be determined based on someone’s previous experience and equity amongst our team.
