Norwegian Refugee Council

NRC is looking for a seasoned independent, collaborative, and diplomatic leader to join the team in South Afghanistan as an Area Manager. The Area Manager is a key member of the Country Management Group who is responsible for the quality and effective programme/project implementation. If you are someone who is experienced in defining, planning, and shaping strategies and initiatives; has a track record in building constructive relationships with external parties; and has the ability to meet new challenges, then this is the role for you!

What You Will Do

  • Strategy design and implementation.
  • Budget ownership and management.
  • Emergency response implementation.
  • Programme and operational activity coordination.
  • Advocacy management.
  • Grants management.
  • Donor engagement and commitment.
  • Health, safety, and security management.

What You Will Bring

  • Senior Management experience in a humanitarian/recovery context.
  • Thematic area technical expertise.
  • High risk, insecure, opaque, complex, and volatile context exposure.
  • South Afghanistan context knowledge.
  • English fluency, both written and verbal.

What Makes This Position Attractive?

  • Afghanistan is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with a risk of systemic collapse and human catastrophe. Following 40-years of constant war and a situation of increasing hunger, economic decline, and rising poverty levels, the country has faced intensified conflict, the worst drought in 27-years, with some areas subject to extreme flooding, the withdrawal of international forces/diplomatic presence, and the take-over of the country by the Taliban. The resulting political, social, and economic shocks continue to resound across the country with a deterioration of the humanitarian and protection situation.
  • This is an opportunity to contribute to the protection and assistance of vulnerable and crisis-affected women, girls, boys, and men. NRC Afghanistan maintains a presence in 14 provinces across the country and is the largest INGO in the country, at a programmatic, field coverage, and staff count level.
  • South Afghanistan is composed of five provinces – Kandahar, Uruzgan, Zabul, Helmand, and Nimroz. The area is in the centre of political influence. NRC South Afghanistan has a strong programme with 11 projects across all thematic areas.
  • Meaningful work that responds to the diverse needs, priorities, and concerns raised by beneficiary communities. NRC Afghanistan meets immediate humanitarian needs, prevents further displacement, and contributes to durable solutions.

What We Offer

  • Kandahar, Afghanistan duty station.
  • 18-months contract duration.
  • 25% travel, approximately.
  • Grade 10 in NRC’s Salary Scale. NRC offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.
  • NRC is an equal opportunities employer and aims to have staffing diversity in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, nationality and physical ability.
  • We think outside the box, encourage ideas, and give responsibility to all employees at all levels. You will have many opportunities to be heard and take the initiative.
