Are you an archaeologist who is an inspirational storyteller, using your knowledge to connect people with places? Are you eager to respond to the climate and biodiversity crisis by supporting some of the UKs most special places? If so, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll be helping us work at a landscape scale to find great solutions for nature and climate. You’ll share our aim to make the historic environment accessible and to become truly inclusive and relevant for everyone.

Location: You’ll be based at one of our hubs in Cheshire, Manchester, Newcastle, York or Lake District, with the opportunity to work from properties and from home some of the time.

Hours: Full time 37.5 hours per week, mainly Monday to Friday with occasional weekends

Salary: Starting £45,000pa

Contract: Permanent

Face to face interviews: 9th February, will include a site visit

What you’ll be doing

You’ll provide a high-quality consultancy service to your clients across a portfolio of properties. You’ll contribute to strategic plans, identify archaeological opportunities, needs and resources required. You’ll enable the Trust to protect and improve the historic environment whilst making the changes we need to, at pace, to respond to the challenges of our generation.

You’ll commission specialist contractors undertaking archaeological work on our behalf. You’ll help develop our Heritage & Archaeology Ranger Teams, building volunteer capacity for condition monitoring, research and engagement activities.

You’ll champion the work of the Trust externally, building partnerships, identifying funding opportunities and inspiring people. You’ll mentor and train property staff and volunteers to build capability and understanding in the care of the historic environment.

Who we’re looking for

A leader for conservation excellence, inclusivity and proactive use of the historic environment to drive and deliver positive landscape change for nature and climate.

We’d like you to:

  • think flexibly, beyond your profession to build and curate networks
  • bring knowledge of archaeological care and management, interpretation and presentation of landscapes, historic places and buildings, including relevant up-to-date legislation
  • have experience of assessing archaeological impacts and opportunities of land use change
  • prioritise your time and lead in your specialism, with a driven focus on delivery and making things happen
  • actively share your passion, knowledge and expertise to upskill and empower others, including volunteers
  • demonstrate how your intervention has positively impacted on project delivery and clients
  • have an understanding of database management, especially Historic Environment Records
