Job Description
The Applied Learning Coordinator will
- proactively implement the Center for Applied Learning’s development plan, curricular leadership, and events across PK-12.
Organizational Status
The Applied Learning Coordinator will report to the School Director.
The Applied Learning Coordinator collaborates with all members of the school administration and business office, as well as external community partners and third-party providers. They collaborate closely with the Service & Sustainability Coordinator, school administration, general affairs, and the facility team.

Key Responsibilities
Curriculum Integration & Intercultural Learning
- Collaborate with faculty to embed applied learning standards in documented curriculum
- Develop elementary Junior Ranger program, integrated with grade-level TDUs
- Build opportunities for students to grow in all six applied learning focus areas
- Collaborate with faculty to implement scope & sequence for six applied learning focus areas:
- Global Citizenship
- Character & Leadership
- Outdoor Education
- Nature Education
- Community Engagement
- Sustainability
Faculty Development & Training
- Develop and lead meetings/workshops to assist students, teachers, parents, and community partners in becoming more effective at facilitating applied learning experiences
- Actively promote play-based and inquiry-driven pedagogy in partnership with faculty
Media Development & Communications
- Create, curate, and publish media to promote the school’s Applied Learning programs
- Serve as administrator and voice behind the @kisapplied Instagram account
- Maintain and update the kisapplied.com website using Wix platform
- Develop and conduct parent workshops to support applied learning
- Engage in media-based storytelling to share about applied learning at KIS through video, photography, social media, and writing
- Supervise and mentor student interns dedicated to applied learning media
Learning Space Development & Resource Management
- Maintain and promote use of the campus outdoor spaces
- Help maintain inventory of applied learning equipment & resources
- Source supplies, resources, books, and equipment to support applied learning goals
Safeguarding & Risk Management
- Train and support faculty in off-campus learning policies, procedures, and skills
- Support child safeguarding and wellbeing through ongoing risk assessment and systems review
- Practice with a designed safety evacuation team
- Conduct regular safety walks of outdoor learning spaces
- Help maintain accurate records of risk mitigation activities and assessments
- Conduct site visits for service partners, third-party providers, and trip locations
- Serve as active Duty Manager for on-campus and off-campus activities when the Applied Learning Coordinator is not available
Trip Development & Event Planning
- Organize logistics, attend, and support the school’s existing off-campus trips, including overnight experiences and adventurous activities.
- Organize on-campus applied learning events, such as Outdoor Classroom Day and grade-level Junior Ranger days
- Organize off-campus applied learning events, such as field trips and overnights
Contract Terms
- Begins August 1, 2023
- Initial contract will be for a period of two (2) years
Qualifications – Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in education, outdoor recreation, curriculum or related field
- Valid teaching certificate
- Valid driver’s license
- Experience teaching across multiple divisions / age groups
- Experience leading professional development workshops
- Experience conducting overnight field trips, including adventurous activities
- Expertise in outdoor activities including hiking, camping, boating, and orienteering
Qualifications – Assets
- Advanced outdoor first aid (NOLS, Active Aid, etc.) certification or the availability to get certified prior to August 1, 2023.
- Professional certifications in various areas of outdoor education
- Recent risk management training and/or certification
- Regional knowledge for hiking/trekking/traveling in Asia
