Ambulance Care Assistant

British Red Cross

Ambulance Care Assistant – Casual (x12 positions) Location: North East England (Middlesbrough and Newcastle) Contract type: Casual Hours: As and when required Salary: £9.50 per hour

We have 12 exciting opportunities, for enthusiastic, and caring individuals to join our team in the North East on a casual basis, to support our Patient Transport Service. You don’t need to have experience – we’re looking for people with the desire to join our team and make a real difference to the lives of people in crisis.

You will work as part of a team responsible for providing safe and effective patient transport for people in the North East, and if necessary, further afield. The role involves driving, or assisting as part of a crew, patients with different requirements based on their mobility classification.

You will play an important role in conveying patients in a safe, comfortable, and sympathetic manner, observing road and driving conditions at all times. Our services are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and we apply the same standards to our service delivery across the whole of the UK. Our fleet and equipment are comparable with those deployed by NHS services.

We’re a close-knit team united by one goal – to save lives.

What to expect

Ambulance Care Assistants tend to work shifts of 9-12 hours duration. Operational hours are between 0800 and 2200 Monday to Sunday. We would be particularly interested in applicants who are able to work weekends. We offer shifts in advance and try to give you as much notice as possible so you can integrate your shifts into your life and commitments (family, study etc). Full training will be provided. We anticipate successful candidates beginning training in early September 2022. The training will be delivered through a mix of online self-service, face-to-face (in Newcastle) and Zoom modules over several different days (so you will require a suitable device with an internet connection). All training attendance is paid.

Please Note: In person training will take place during various weekends in September. It is mandatory to attend these face-to-face sessions.

The role includes working face to face with service users and social distancing will not always be maintained therefore, it may not be suitable for people that may be at higher risk of harm from Covid-19.

What you’ll bring to the role

  • Your warm, caring nature and positive attitude will bring comfort to patients. You’ll be sensitive when working with vulnerable people and have no trouble going the extra mile to make them feel comfortable, safe and cared for.
  • Your previous experience, as well as understanding and awareness of the differing physical needs of our service users and a genuine interest in their well-being; and your desire to help people in your local community.
  • Your enthusiasm and willingness to take on whatever challenges this role presents.

This role might be for you if you have:

  • A full driving licence which allows you to operate a manual transmission vehicle (please note that, due to vehicle insurance policy requirements, applicants must have held their licence for a minimum of two full years)
  • Are Qualified to GCSE level in Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • You can bring your strong customer service or patient caring skills to the British Red Cross
  • Flexible – comfortable working shifts including unsocial hours, bank holidays, evenings and weekends as required

Closing date for applications is (23:59) Wednesday 13th July 2022.

Interviews are expected to take place on Tuesday (19th) and Thursday (21st) July 2022. They will be held face to face (in Newcastle) and will include an element of driving assessment. Please note that early application is encouraged, as we’ll be reviewing applications throughout the advertising period and reserve the right to close this vacancy in advance of the published closing date.
