Terms of Reference

Title: Alight Guides – Ukraine Response Team (Ukrainian-English)

Location: Various locations throughout Poland

Start/End dates: 3 months assignment (12 weeks)

Purpose:

Join Alight’s response team in Poland as an Alight Guide. As an Alight Guide, you will 1) process, 2) connect to resources and 3) orient displaced Ukrainians you encounter at critical transit hubs such as train stations, reception centers and resource hubs in Lviv, Ukraine; Warsaw, and Krakow, as well as border reception sites in Przemysl/Medyka. Because the overall team will be posted along the migrant journey from Lviv to Wroclaw, Guides are critical in orienting and connecting displaced Ukrainian customers to housing resources and other support offered on-site or regionally. Your post will be in the Krakow, Poland area.

You will ask for and listen to the needs of Ukrainian refugees, engage in an empathetic and supportive way, then guide them towards short term and/or long-term housing connections. You may also support them with wayfinding, direct material support and insight gathering.

Guides will be stationed in pairs of two, working together to learn from and actively support Ukrainian refugees along their journey.

Specific Activities:

  • Approach and engage refugees at transit centers and reception sites, utilizing principles of psychological first aid to connect with empathy, care, dignity, and sensitivity
  • Rapidly assess housing needs: what type of accommodation individuals/families need, duration, location, and other special requests
  • Connect refugees to AirBnB.org emergency temporary accommodation
  • Connect refugees to Alight’s housing resources for longer term housing when available
  • Gather insights and contribute to team discussions to identify additional ways to support refugees based on those insights
  • Gather insights and feedback from refugees, utilizing the Kuja Kuja method and online tool for data capture
  • Work with your regional team to contribute to and deliver Alight’s do-the-doable funds and project resources
  • Other duties as needed: Any other activities that may be required in a rapidly and changing environment.

Required/Recommended Skills & Experience

  • Fluent in Ukrainian and English. Polish fluency is also desirable.
  • Comfortable working on computers/tablets/ smartphones. Able to manage and troubleshoot apps like Airbnb, Viber, Google Docs and Microsoft Sharepoint
  • Background in social work, teaching, community service, hospitality service, psychology, or other related professional or volunteer experience is a plus.
  • Ability to make a human connection and engage with a variety of people in an extremely stressful environment
  • Calming disposition to talk with people who are in crisis, warm and welcoming presence
  • Relationship builder – you know how to quickly establish trust and follow-through as you will be helping to build Alight‘s brand recognition along the Ukrainian refugee journey
  • Willing to work at the border and busy transit sites, supporting relief efforts in a grassroots way
  • Enjoy talking with people one on one all day, on phone, text, and in-person
  • Proactive, you can learn how to connect people to action and aid. Be able to troubleshoot issues
  • Flexibility is key. Ability to organize and adapt in a rapidly changing environment
  • Level-headed under pressure & stress as we are operating in an ever-evolving context
