Objectives and general characteristics of the position:

The Agriculture Field Officer is responsible for the direct implementation of CEFA’s agriculture activities in West Pokot County (Pellow and Masol conservancies and neighboring wards), under the direct supervision of the Livelihood Field Coordinator. (S)He will work on the delivery of training on Good Agronomic Practices, on the provision of technical support and assistance to mango farmers, on the supervision of the demo plots identified under the project, on the selection and mobilization of farmers beneficiaries. (S)he will be involved in mobilization of beneficiaries, organization of project workshops and in monitoring activities in collaboration with the project M&E/Reporting officer. The objective of the position is to closely monitor and support farmers to enhance the production of mango, NSA and other agriculture interventions among the target beneficiaries in partnership with technical partners in the county to promote CEFA objectives and also manage any challenges.

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Assist the Livelihood Field Coordinator and the Regional Agronomist in planning and scheduling all agricultural interventions with key focus on mango, irrigation and NSA activities.
  • Project promotion at community and local authorities’ level, and advocacy on CEFA livelihoods interventions.
  • Deliver training on mango and NSA to farmer beneficiaries and assist in the organization of project workshops.
  • Establish and monitor NSA demonstration plots under the supervision of the Livelihood Field Coordinator and the Regional Agronomist.
  • Conduct monitoring missions and collect data following instructions from the Field Coordinator and M&E officer.
  • Support the Field Coordinator and the Regional Agronomist in the preparation of training manuals and materials.
  • Ensure the timely implementation of field works as per the predefined schedule.
  • Assist the field coordinator and the project manager in the organization of field monitoring mission with donor’s, local authorities’ representatives, and organization’s staff.
  • Inform and document lessons and the challenges encountered during the implementation phase of the program and proposed field level management measures.
  • Support in building and keeping cordial relationships between CEFA and county authorities.
  • Prepare weekly workplans and reports and submit in good time.
  • File, document and report work progress to the field coordinator and M&E officer on a weekly basis.
  • Assist the M&E office in collecting information on beneficiaries’ success stories.
  • Regular reporting of progress and updates to Field Coordinator and Regional Agronomist.
  • Conduct beneficiaries’ selection and mobilization and provide continuous technical support in agriculture.
  • Facilitate training sessions on Good Agricultural Practices and Climate Smart Agriculture.
  • Ensure the compilation of attendance lists and project documentation when required.
  • Support monitoring activities by providing the M&E officer with data and updated information from the field.
  • Support the agricultural inputs distribution.
  • Continuous follow-up with farmers on training and agricultural activities
  • Conduct field visits and provision of technical support to farmers and project beneficiaries
  • Any other activities that might be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Required experience:

  • Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Agriculture or any related fields.
  • Past working experience of at least one (1) year in agricultural programs in humanitarian/development sector.
  • Previous experience working in Pellow and Masol conservancies is an asset.
  • Previous experience in the mango value chain is a strong asset.
  • Must be able to ride motorcycle and have a valid riding license.
  • Knowledge of English, Swahili and Pokot languages.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Being a resident of Pellow (Sekerr, Kasei and Endough), West Pokot is desirable

Reports to: CEFA Livelihood Field Coordinator and CEFA Project Manager.
