Advocacy Officer

United Network of Young Peacebuilders

Starting date: Second half of September, 2022

Duration: 6 months (Monday-Thursday, 32h/week)

Location: The Hague, Netherlands.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Please note that the position is unpaid. You will receive a stipend of 400 EUR per month to cover some expenses. You must be a legal resident or citizen of the EU. We unfortunately cannot sponsor a work permit/visa. You need to be already registered or be able to register in the Netherlands. Having a BSN (Dutch registration number) is a legal requirement. You should also be enrolled in a university for the duration of the internship. Age between 20 and 29. You also need to have access to a personal computer and secure internet connection.

About UNOY Peacebuilders

UNOY is a youth-led network of over 131 youth organisations working towards more peaceful societies. We embrace values of peace, diversity, inclusion, and participation. At UNOY, young people have the opportunity to gain work experience in the field of peacebuilding, join an international team, develop new skills, and connect with young people and organisations around the world. All interns are supported by a supervisor in identifying their personal learning goals, training opportunities, and monitoring progress throughout the internship.

As the Advocacy Officer, you will work under the direct supervision of the advocacy coordinator and will support the Co-Director (programmes) in global advocacy. Your tasks will include:

Regional & National Advocacy:

  • Supporting the development of two regional advocacy teams;
  • Organising meetings of the African Youth Advocacy team and coordinating communications, to support the implementation of the team’s strategy;
  • Supporting the implementation of advocacy initiatives on the regional and national levels led by UNOY members;
  • Supporting the preparation of the EU YPS conference including working with EU partners and youth participants;
  • Supporting the organisation of the workshop series on implementing the YPS agenda on the country level;
  • Organizing a Dutch level advocacy event to take place in 2023;
  • Supporting the preparation of the advocacy mission to the African Union in October 2022;
  • Updating the 2250 toolkit on national level efforts on YPS.

Global Advocacy:

  • Supporting the follow up of the Doha conference, specifically preparation of workshops on yps implementation for public officials;
  • Supporting the coordination of the Civil Society Working Group on YPS;
  • Assisting with the debrief of our members after high level representation activities and frequently updating the representation tracker;
  • Supporting the coordination of the Global Coalition on YPS and relevant working streams.

Programmatic support:

  • Supporting the Advocacy Coordinator with conducting interviews for Contribution analysis as part of development of PMEL for Advocacy Programme;
  • Supporting the development of UNOY’s new advocacy strategy.
  • Following thematic discussions on climate and other relevant issues.
  • Supporting the coordination of UNOY’s YPS Research Network.

Administrative tasks:

  • General office support and support to PMEL beyond the assigned programme tasks, when requested.

We are looking for somebody who has:

  • Experience or a strong interest in peacebuilding and youth work;
  • Excellent intercultural communications, analytical, and organisational skills;
  • Previous experience with advocacy is an asset;
  • Familiarity with YPS agenda is an asset ;
  • A higher education degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) in peace and conflict, international relations and related fields. We also welcome candidates who are in their last year of undergraduate degree;
  • Fluency in English. Working knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic is a plus;
  • Enthusiasm, commitment, and takes initiative;
  • Experience in qualitative data analysis and carrying out interviews is an asset;
  • Self-motivation, flexibility and capability to work independently and in a team.
