JOB PURPOSE:

As Advocacy Advisor, you will ensure that Amnesty Tech’s outputs on Artificial Intelligence have clear and consistent impact in policy spheres. You will ensure that the Algorithmic Accountability Lab, as well as wider Amnesty Tech, is respected as an expert group by policymakers and that our advocacy efforts are well-received; coordinate with Amnesty International’s national sections and other civil society groups in this space to build high impact coalitions; develop a coherent and targeted advocacy strategy for the next couple of years on Artificial Intelligence and human rights issues and work closely with other members of the team to ensure everyone is aligned on the same advocacy goals.

This post will sit in Brussels and be embedded in the Algorithmic Accountability Lab, as well as work closely with Amnesty’s European Institutions Office (EIO) and national-level Amnesty sections. Though this post will work closely with the EIO, it will have a global remit and therefore lead global advocacy on public sector use of algorithmic systems.

ABOUT YOU:

**A motivated and strategic advocacy professional with substantial experience influencing policymakers and legislators on human rights issues. You will have a good knowledge of various advocacy levers and be confident in both written and oral communication skills. You will have experience navigating complex policy environments. You will be adept at developing and managing relationships with all kinds of stakeholders and be able to translate research outputs into clear advocacy materials. You are committed to embedding anti-racism, intersectionality and decolonial thinking in both your work and team’s wider culture.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, cultivate and leverage productive relationships with decision-makers, legislators, CSOs, policy experts and researchers to deliver on the AAL’s advocacy goals; build effective coalition efforts and campaigns to advocate for urgently needed regulation of AI and algorithms which centres human-rights;
  • Develop the AAL’s advocacy strategy on algorithmic systems in the public sector and AI regulation; facilitate brainstorming and strategic planning sessions;
  • Monitor and analyse key policy and regulatory trends in AI, algorithmic accountability and human rights; track emerging standards for algorithmic transparency and governance around the world to inform the AAL’s advocacy tactics;
  • Spearhead Amnesty Tech’s advocacy activities around the EU’s AI Act as a first priority.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Approximately 3 to 5 years’ experience in advocacy or advocacy-related work, preferably in the AI/emerging tech and human rights field.
  • Experience working with and strategically engaging varied stakeholders including policymakers, legislators, CSOs, IGOs, media, regulatory bodies and public sector agencies.
  • Ability to identify, analyse and exploit opportunities for influencing authorities on human rights issues.
  • Strong abilities in strategic planning, including priority setting and meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Robust understanding of EU institutions and ability to navigate other government/policy environments.
