COMMUNICATION ADVISOR – VOLUNTEER MANDATE

Country: Ghana

CONTEXT

Oxfam-Quebec is implementing its new volunteer cooperation program (VCP) entitled « Equality in Action » working in close collaboration with Oxfam teams in the countries of intervention. This program will take place over a period of seven years (2020-2027) in thirteen countries and three regions.

The VCP aims to increase the performance of local partner organizations in developing countries in implementing inclusive, innovative, and sustainable development initiatives that will advance gender equality in the 13 countries. Oxfam’s role is to support civil society organizations (CSOs) working with the most vulnerable and marginalized people to claim and exercise their rights. Oxfam puts women’s/girls’ rights at the heart of everything it does. The knowledge, capacity and expertise of the qualified volunteers will be leveraged through short and long-term assignments with local partner organizations.

The VCP will be articulated within Oxfam’s Country Strategy while ensuring compliance with Oxfam-Québec’s contractual agreements with its donors.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

In close collaboration with the Oxfam team members in the country of intervention, the volunteer will be responsible to:

· Work closely with the partners to develop and implement their communication strategies and associated tools and, templates and formats.

· Promote effective communication among partners using appropriate channels to stimulate action and strengthen relationships on the Programme.

· Review and continually communicate with partners and volunteers changes in the external (local, sub-regional and international) and developments relevant to OXFAM.

· Develop relevant information, communication and education materials and knowledge products for dissemination within VCP, OXFAM and other partners.

· Support the preparation of programme abstracts and policy briefs from programme related activities, progress reports and documents.

· Support the identification of stakeholders and promote effective engagement.

· Build and maintain relationships with media houses, journalists, bloggers, and communication staff in the Partner Organizations.

· Review and clarify partners’ external communication materials to ensure they deliver the correct information about the VCP and OXFAM and engage the appropriate audience.

· Share and embody Oxfam’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for any behaviour that violates the code of conduct, including sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse, intimidation, lack of integrity, corruption and fraud.

· Participate in development efforts in Canada during and after the mandate by contributing to the dissemination of the program, projects, partners, etc. through testimonials, life stories, photos, quotes, etc.

REQUIREMENTS

· Have Canadian citizenship or citizenship of a country in West Africa.

· Master’s degree in Communication, Journalism or related field.

· 3-5 years of relevant experience in a communications role.

· Knowledge of relevant publishing and communication software.

· Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

· Good time management and organizational skills.

· Fluency in English is a requirement.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, content management systems, and social media platforms.

· Demonstrated capacity to cross and bridge cultural, racial, and gender divides.

· Knowledge of the West African culture and context (desirable).

· Experience in international development (an asset)

· Adherence to Oxfam’s mission and values, including the promotion of equality between women and men.
