Position Summary:
The Administrator / Director of Institut Brenda Strafford is responsible for the overall management and function of The Institut; maximizing positive impact for the people we serve through the effective, efficient, and safe provision of high-quality, accessible services. As the primary representative for The Institut, The Administrator / Director is an active participant in The Institut’s efforts to provide a person-centered approach and promote a culture of safety. Furthermore, this role is responsible to uphold the Mission, Vision, and Values of The Institut, and achieve its strategic goals.

Institut Brenda Strafford works as a family, united in its charitable mission to provide high-quality, person-centered, professional Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) services to improve the lives of people in Haiti. Providing services in Les Cayes, Haiti in partnership with the Ministry of Health since 1982, the Institut strives to be the first choice of Ophthalmology and ENT health care for our communities. Our core values are people first, quality, engagement, leadership, and compassion.
With a full-time staff of 108 local and international employees, The Institut provides over 50,000 consultations, 2,000 surgeries and 150 student internships per year. Services for ophthalmology and ENT care include consultation, surgery, emergency care, hospital-based care, pharmacy and medicine production laboratory, medical laboratory, specialized eye and ear tests, optometry services, and community outreach.
The Institut is part of The Brenda Strafford Foundation, a registered Canadian charity, established in 1975 by Dr. Barrie I. Strafford in memory of his late wife, Brenda. The Foundation’s core activities revolve around seniors’ care in the Calgary area. Through ‘BSF Cares’, The Foundation runs and supports several charitable activities serving seniors, women and children in Alberta, and underserved populations in Haiti, Dominica, and Jamaica. Direct reports: Medical Director, Finance and HR Manager, Head of Maintenance, Head of Security, Head of Archives, Biomedical Engineer, Administration Assistants
Key responsibilities:
· Oversee all aspects of The Institut to ensure its effective and efficient function to have a positive impact on the people we serve
· Ensure activities align with and are supportive of the mission, vision, and values of The Institut
· Exemplify leadership that reinforces the organization’s values and philosophy as an example to all employees, patients, and external stakeholders
· Develop and implement strategic and annual plans as approved by The Foundation
· Identify and manage risks to The Institut and The Foundation in a timely manner
· Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets as approved by The Foundation
· Support the Medical Director in their efforts to ensure safe and effective care at The Institut
· Coordinate and support the function of the department heads in administrative and support roles
· Plan and coordinate employee contracts and staff deployment in conjunction with the department heads to ensure effective, efficient, and safe delivery of high-quality, person-centered service
· Ensure services meet or exceed the needs and expectations of our patients
· Ensure policies and procedures enable an effective, efficient, and safe environment
· Ensure The Institut conforms to all necessary legislation and regulations
· Ensure all legal, regulatory, and financial records are current and make them available to audit by The Foundation or authorized agencies
· Ensure an effective monitoring and evaluation system that drives continuous improvement of services and provides timely reports to be shared with The Foundation and key stakeholders
· Foster and sustain positive relationships with local and international partners
· Ensure effective communication within The Institut with department heads, staff, and patients
· Oversee logistics activities for the efficient function of the Institut including purchasing, supplier management, inventory control, and signing checks on behalf of The Institut
· Ensure effective preventative maintenance controls to ensure all critical equipment is properly utilized and maintained to support safe and effective service delivery
· Ensure performance evaluations are completed for all employees
· Contribute to fund development and communication efforts for The Institut and The Foundation
· Stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices
· Carry out or lead any other tasks required to ensure the effective function of The Institut
Qualifications:
· University degree in social sciences, business, health, or relevant field (graduate degree preferred)
· Fluency in Haitian Creole/French and English
· Five years of leadership/management experience with a focus on operations or administration
· Three years living and working in Haiti or a similar low-resource setting highly preferred
· Demonstrated skills in leadership, budgeting, and administration
· Experience in health or non-profit organizations is highly preferred
